MEV announce the new R2
Posted by Madabout News on Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 at 10:53 PM

Article by Chris Pickering.

As we reach the end of 2007 every potential kit car builder must be asking themselves what they’d like for Christmas. The new R2 from Mills Extreme Vehicles (otherwise know as MEV) may not quite fit in your stocking, but this compact roadster is claimed to be the easiest car on the market to build; ensuring that even complete novices could be up and running in time to collect next years tree.

The car uses an all-new tubular steel space frame clothed in a two seat GRP body, whilst power comes from a mid mounted Ford Sigma engine ranging in capacity from 1.6 to 2 litres. The Focus donor provides virtually all the remaining parts, with only the seats and lighting left to be supplied. Thanks to an all-up weight in the region of 470kg even the base spec engine delivers a power to weight ratio of 210bhp/ton.

With this in mind performance should be very lively with the more powerful examples expected to post a sub-4 second nought to sixty time. Meanwhile, the suspension uses a familiar double wishbone arrangement with coil springs over adjustable damper units. Stopping power comes from the donor car's discs and there is the option of 4-pot aluminium callipers at an additional £200.

The comprehensive kit is priced at £3,995 and orders are being taken now with an estimated total build cost (including the donor) of £6,000. MEV's formula of simple and cost-effective sportscars looks set to pay off as the first kits make their way out of the factory in February. Expect a full road test some time in the New Year – until then enjoy the holidays!
