Keeping with the minimalistic approach we fitted the wind screen.

Those mirrors look pretty good to me, and they're in just the right place to be usable too.

I am still waiting for DVLA to return the paperwork for this car but as it's going to be a nice weekend and the current owner assures me the car is mechanically sorted I though I would "road test it" over the weekend.
But first a few trips around the estate just to be safe!:scared: The first trip highlighted to a noisy gearbox so I returned and checked it out! What you see in the drip-tray is the entire contence on the gearbox!! https://i.imgur.com/944r07dh.jpg No wonder it was noisy!! I also re-checked all other fluid levels. The next issue was the brakes as they seamed to be sticking on which was affecting the steering. I tried to free and return the caliper pistons in the normal way but bent my clamps. https://i.imgur.com/BttSVSnh.jpg Finally I had to remove the caliper and use the vice to return the pistons but after several attempts and much effort the pistons where still sticking so I ordered a new pair of calipers due Monday which should have stopped my weekends fun. I wanted to do a few miles in the car over Easter and enjoy the sun shine but was plagued with teething problems.
The first problem was the brakes sticking on which after a few hours of elimination require an over hall of the brake master cylinder to rectify them. The next was the engine as it just didn't feel right but the owner assure me the engine was tuned by his local expert so I was very reluctant to touch it but. :icon_redface: On inspection, I found the ignition timing was out by about 6 degrees, the carbs were running very rich and out of balance! One jet needing 3 1/2 full turns to get the mixture some where near right. :tsk: The car now ticks over evenly, runs a lot smoother and sounds even better!!. I am not an expert I just know how to read a spark plug, use a strobe light, use a colour tune kit and a set-up a carb balancer !! Also I have never been happy with the steering and believed a worn track rod end was to blame. This was changed giving some improvement but still something was wrong! It turns out the Triumph steering column safety clamp was loose!!!!:scared: No wonder the steering felt wrong!!! Hopefully DVLA will sort the paperwork out soon so I can advertise it and sell it!! In the mean time I'll try and enjoy the sun next weekend. :high5: |
Hi Micky, I'm sure you've thoroughly checked the system, but the brakes sticking could be down to lack of lubrication on the rear wheel cylinders where they mount through the back plates. The whole cylinder is supposed to be able to slide so it can re-centre when you lift off the pedal.
My Spyder would drag its brakes for about half a second after releasing the pedal for about the first year until I tracked the problem down to a rear cylinder slider that had picked up some grit in its grease. I also had an aftermarket master cylinder that would lock the brakes on completely every time you pressed the pedal. Fortunately that happened during the build process so I swapped it for another m/cyl before venturing onto the road. Final thought - check the steering rack mountings very carefully. If it has solid alloy rack mounts fitted, make sure that there's some means of stopping the rack from sliding laterally. I've now fitted two sets of alloy rack mounts, one from ebay and one from a reputable Triumph parts supplier, and both sets required the deletion of the 'U' clamp cover that holds down standard rack mounts but also locks the rack in place. With just the solid mounts in place it's only friction that holds the rack stable and once the engine dripped a bit of oil on it, mine came loose and was able to move about half an inch from side to side. This made the steering very unresponsive to the point of it being dangerous on the one occasion I drove it on the road. I made up a couple of simple steel fillets to stop the rack moving about, but I really don't understand why the solid rack mount kit doesn't contain something suitable. I'll take a picture later so you can see what I mean. Anyway, best of luck with the fettling and sale. :) |
