Garyh's Sammio build
Havn't done much more than this yet, but i read this forum day and night keeping upto date with everybodies builds. A great bunch of people who hopefully i will meet in the coming years.

Wow, another builder with a sieve for a floor! Welcome to the novice welders' club.
Is it a lightweight four or a silky six? |
Doh, should've looked at the pic's a bit closer, doughnuts = Mk2 Vitesse.
|
Evening Mr. T
It will also have different cam, not sure how different!:flame:

I didn't know you could get uprated knobbly sticks for the Triumph 2000.
Any links you could post to save me the effort of googling it? :spy: |
Just read your 'blog Gary. Talk about one-upmanship: I'm welding up a rotten old chassis with a new welder, so you buy a mig welder that needs to be restored before you can use it on your rotten chassis!
Worthy of 'the four Yorkshiremen' sketch. "New arc welder you say? You were lucky! There were 'undred and fifty of us using broken down mig welder..." |
Knobbly Sticks, like it...
Canley or Jigsaw Racing. The box mine was in said Kentcams? bought on ebay. The engine will get a full rebuild at some point this year...

wow gary u sure had a quick strip down, chassis looks good solid tho.... were are the out riggers ?

Hi Gary
Having just completed a spraying the wife's Herald in Old English White thats the colour I have settled on too. I think its a class colour and so period.. Im a long way off getting colour on though. |
To Mulberry & Pops
If you get a chance Mulberry look at my blog, you'll see the state of chassis. Pops, I agree that colour will be great... It's just that I feel the Sammio, in my eyes is more Italian than English! I'm also going for white walled tyres, it's funny how a colour can change the interpretation of the picture in my head...:ranger:
|
ah its yout blog,, i saw eletric engine hoist,, lucky bugger....
|
Electric engine hoist
Hi Mulberry, only used it once... So good just pressing a button and not struggle!
|
Hopefully work will resume W/C 19th Feb
As much as I like to hear what others are up to, I can't wait to get on with my own build. Its been a struggle stuck at home DIYing, doing things that i once relished but now get in the way of my currrent hobby. I would like to build an old bicycle in the same style as my car will be... thats another project! My wife is now prepared to release funds as i go... if i start buying parts in the order i require them! Already spent £5500 in total:nono:
|
Hi Gary,
Know the feeling...although mine is more to do with being on my tod...at least your misses cleans the house, does the ironing...cooks a hearty meal and you know:ballchain: .... I seem to spend the whole bloody weekend doing womens work....isnt it great knowing there are no women on here...we can be so sexist and get away with it...(that should flush them out  ) I`m now waiting for the first reply sayin "I know why you are on your own" :icon_mrgreen: Thats another ongoing project.... You still up for the beers on Sunday? |
Oh yes, might be too early for pint?
Sunday at 10am... I've seen the wife do the ironing! 20mins tops, its not rocket science. As i say to her 'I can't do everything'
PLEASE DELETE AFTER READING. |
OK Bacon roll and tea then....you are welcome to bring the misses...I have a pile of ironing she can do while we chat.

Had my first go at welding:laser: today, i think i ended up with a better idea of what to do... Mr.T, what thickness metal did you use to plug the holes? Quit a lot of work to do on the chassis which looks quite fiddly as there are alot of brackets around the area. :biggrin1:

That's because that's what I had to hand rather than for any complicated technical reasons. Oh, and well done for having a go at welding, nice to see another newbie having a go! |
That sounds about the same as me. I used 1.2mm for floor and outrigger repairs as that i what i had left over from my floor pans, and it seems about the same thickness. Then a bit of 3mm sheet i had left over from my last project for repairing some of the thicker pieces as it seemed to be the same thickness?
|
The chassis seems to be made up of very thin steel?
just sandwiched together to make it seem thicker! No wonder their are so many holes. Barn finds sound so romantic but unless the car is worth many thousands once restored, i will never touch one again.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_6588.jpg But the shotblasting is going well... http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_6587.jpg Thanks goes to 'T' for getting pics to appear in text. Welding not to bad, i hope? http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_0700.jpg |
It may be Olde English white...
But it is now a little bit Italian! My £10 bid for a hand brake has been successful, its from a 2009 Ferrari 599.

Thanks Psycho, i will return that...
|
Where can i get olde engilsh white chassis paint... or do i use the paint for the body?
|
Finally started to weld
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_6658.jpghttp://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_6659.jpghttp://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_6661.jpghttp://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMG_6662.jpg
I know it does'nt look pretty, but once i started to rub down i thought it looked better... I will just add some weld where the holes are. :flame: |
I would consider plating the whole side, bending a flange on each edge to give you a channel section so you can weld onto existing doublers. Then you can prep a bit harder before you weld as the metal is thicker, up the amps a bit and get a stronger weld. Before the final fit either remove the old section or take out some metal with a hole saw so when you finally inject some waxyoil it gets where needed.

And i will up the amps! http://garyssammiospyderbuild.blogspot.co.uk/ |
Looks fine to me: it's exactly what I did to mine. :)
|
Yep, up the amps, and move slowly, the aim is to 'puddle' the molten metal and 'drag' it along the join.
Also, you can make up larger holes with several smaller patches to make it easier to shape. Have a hammer handy and as the metal gets warm with the welding you will find it is much easier to bend into shape and form curves etc. it will 'stretch' a certain amount too. I have an assortment of bodyshop hammers with points, flats, shrinking heads etc which come in very handy! You can never have too many hammers! Well done, though, it is the start of a very satisfying journey! |
Can i fill the small holes with weld? and if so, whats the technique?
|

You will need to do it in short bursts. Work around the edge of the hole and that will give you something to bridge the gap. Again, don't be afraid of holding the arc in one stop to let it puddle. you will get good penetration of the weld then. If you are filling holes you made whilst welding then this is fine, if you are looking to fill small rusty holes then it may be better to put on a small plate as you will find the small hole will grow and grow! As mentioned, it is sometimes better to cut out the rusty bits and put on a plate about 10mm bigger than the hole, so when you waxoyl the box section, it will get where it is going to protect the plate. Otherwise the waxoly will sit on the inside of the rusty bits and not get on your new plate. It may also be worth getting hold of some "seam-sealer" (I use the U-POL P88 stuff) which is brushed on like a thick paint over the welds and adds another layer of protection before you paint. It can be painted into the nooks and crannies that the MIG gun won't reach. |

I Have bought Metal ready prep spray/ POR 15, then i was going to use a cellulose u/coat and topcoat. |

Nick |
I will give this a go Nick as the ends need doing. I know they will have to come off, but i may as well do them for some practice.
Question. I am trying to take the old bushes out of the wishbones, the metal sleeves seem to be very hard and i can't get a full size hacksaw blade through the hole, any suggestions? |
Nick just did my wishbone bushes this week. They were solid but a heat gun applied let the bushes supple up and slide out pretty easily, putting the new ones in was easy by comparison.
pops |
Thanks Pops/Nick, sounds obvious... When you put new bushes in - grease them? It doesn't hurt the rubber?
Another question, getting the pulley wheel off of the water pump? |
I got my old ones out with a blow torch. There was then a metal sheath which I had to cut through with a hack saw and then hammer the shite out of them to get the metal sheaths out.
Putting the new ones in was easy with a bit of fitting grease for a couple but the majority were right brass studs. The first photo shows the metal sheath before I realised it needed removing https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-q...2008.17.40.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...2012.20.29.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-x...2012.24.15.jpg Then I got an engineering mate to help https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...2010.13.26.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Y...2010.17.05.jpg RESULT!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-U...2010.17.27.jpg |
That was handy, i like the look of all that machinery... i wish i knew an engineer as i want to make a gearknob like they use on lightweight E types. I have seen one for sale but they want £65!
|
I can ask him. What size, thread, material?
Not sure if he will, he is a friend I ride mountain bikes with which always ends with beer in the garage. He offered to help with the bushings after seeing my efforts with the vice |
