NUBODI AUTOMOTIVE - 250 replica exhaust
 

I have been thinking about replicating the exhaust fitted to the Ferrari 250’s for a while but could not find the right parts.

I can buy them new for around £2500(!)This is what they look like.

This is the exhaust I made a year ago which was more inspired by a Daytona but has served me well although too quiet.

Eventually after buying different tailpipes the correct ones came. So I purchased three more. These are approx the right shape and are double skinned which as you will see is important. I bought some 1” 304 grade stainless strip and chopped it into 24 squares. I rounded off the corners for a better look. I found some Y-sections in 304 stainless and some 2” tubes which were cut into four.

There is a distinctive shape in the side of the tailpipe which I wanted to cut out. I used a Dremel with a stainless cutting disc. It looks easy but is in fact very difficult to do with a grinder. The first two attempts were not perfect so they will go on the inside. The next two were better.

I used a rotary burr to clean up the edges. All the parts needed were assembled and off I went to Longlife in Basingstoke to see Matt who is a fantastic TIG welder. He was very hesitant when I asked him what I wanted him to make for me. I convinced him he could do it and off we went. I measured the circumference of the straight tubes and made 6 lines on each. Matt welded the squares onto the end...all 24 of them! He then made up two reducers with his magic pipe spreader which bridged the gap from the Y section to the 2 ½” bore of the tailpipes. He then welded it all together.

The old exhaust was removed and the BMW exhaust cut where he needed it. The 3.0 has two pipe outlets whereas most of the 2.8’s have one. So two separate pipes were bent and attached to the front outlets. He then tack welded the tailpipe assemblies to the pipes. I attached the exhaust rubber bobbins and he welded on a support bracket for each. The system was removed and seam welded.

A centre support was welded onto the left pipe and secured with the original Z3 rubber mount. The two centre pipes were joined by a rather nice bar bracket. I have to paint inside the side shape, the exhaust inners and the end bracket in heat resistant matt black paint yet but you get the idea. So the moment of truth arrived. Removing 4 silencers did the trick...it’s loud enough now but has a very deep growl with endless popping and crackling on the overrun. I would even say I prefer the sound to the original Ferrari. Perfect. Very happy customer. So the cost of all this? Remember the tailpipes took three hours to make and two more hours to finish the whole system. This system in future will cost you £585. You will have to wait four weeks though as Matt is in great demand, but worth every penny. Come and see it / hear it at Stoneleigh 2016.

I believe Ansa also do something similar.

Not sure if either company has UK suppliers. If not, you could always contact them about UK distribution rights and becoming their agent. So long as we're still in the EU of course... :peep:

These are like the ones I took off though not 250 style..the Ansa ones are a fortune as well, I have them on my Daytona.

I had to tell the wife I got lost on the way home...I did not want to get out of the car. This is going to cost me a fortune in extra fuel.

He did a nice job.

Clamps showing were removed after some additional welding.

These look similar budget versions are available

They are actually only 1/2 inch bigger than the originals, its not the best picture (makes them look bigger) but its still b****y raining.

COOL LOOKING PIPES EVERYONE ...Nice find Roadster ..they will work very nicely for someone on a budget ...

Rich they do look good look forward to the full pictures and sound once that flippin rain stops!
