Banded Steels
So like all of us I spend too much time mulling over wheels for my kit.
What diameter Width Offset Colour Square or staggered Wires ? Alloys Steels Anyway the list goes on and on I fancy steels but widths are not enough (maybe) Anyone have experience of buying and using them ? More importantly if you have owned a car with banded what was the relationship and cost to insure? Cheers Dave |
Dave,
Take a look a Seanick's build thread. He produced some beautiful banded steels. See the first page (link below). And, if you want to see how a professional laminator makes changes, keep clicking. I was inspired by this thread. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...ead.php?t=3924 |

Thanks very much. Great thread which I had missed before. I thought I had read every corner of this forum but appears not :) What I'm after really is whether anyone had experience of insurance NOT accepting banded steels at all. I can get the widths I want with alloys but they leave me with limited options. I suppose I had better bite the bullet and get a view from the insurance company. Just didn't want to give too much away pre-build. Thanks again Dave |
I've never had an insurer go into that level of detail to insure a kit car.
A banded steel wheel won't have any value as such. I would be more concerned over the legality of this type of wheel when used on the road. |

Back to searching for wheels again and again and again :) |
Lots of info on Rods & Sods.
Can't find a definitive answer though ! Looks like they were illegal at some point 30 years ago but maybe its ok now. Ask your wheel shop, MOT man or even VOSA, it will be in the small print some where, one way or another . |
Thanks L@LM :)
Finding a definitive answer is indeed that - nigh on impossible. I know people that have banded steels (a family member had them on his BMW M3 with a Mk1 Escort body shell). He was cagey as to how 'legal' they were... trying to persuade me to have them though ! Dave |
These any good ?? They can do custom widths not just what's in stock
