kingfisher countess ?
I have a registered KINGFISHER countess with no engine and an unregistered part built countach replica on space frame chassis , kingfisher is dog ugly but registered as a " classic vehicle " , its based on a beetle chassis but theres no mention of it on the log book , think it was registered in 1980 ! is there a way on combining them both as my part built is a very close replica and has the v12 ?

It could be physically possible, but the legalities are another matter :eusa_naughty:

I was thinking how much of the original chassis would I need to incorporate into my car as the beetle main chassis is just a long tube and that's got the numbers on it , the shells both have no numbers

I suspect there is 'paperwork' and the only way (I say that tentatively, because they may change their answer after the event) is to ask DVLA what to do. As an 'indicator' of 'other paperwork' we may not be party to, I'm sure when I registered my Quantum the inspector made a note of the position of the chassis number (ie on inside of RH wing close to bulkhead) - the fact that the car then became incorrectly registered as a 2 seater is another indicator that they sometimes get it wrong. I was then told by the local DVLA office that I must have filled in the form incorrectly (I hadn't). Fortunately I had the SVA paperwork and a photo of the car outside the SVA building (although I didn't have to produce this documentation). They then sent me a reminder to tax the fiesta which I'd donated to the build! Oops, sorry I'm rambling...….

no its all interesting stuff , I will hopefully get a few opinions on this as it will save me going through the sva , I will still get it checked regardless just for peace of mind

As, my (limited) understanding is that in order to retain the identity of a VW Beetle, you need to keep both floor pans attached to the long tube in the middle. I am sure this was a clarification that ACE (Association of Car Enthusiasts) received from the DVLA/VOSA. ( But as I wasn’t planning to do anything with a VW, I didn’t pay too much attention to this. ) I know I have mentioned a guy called Kev/Kapri over on Rods 'n' Sods before, but he really is the expert on this sort of stuff. As it currently stands, I would work on the basis that, for your project, all roads lead to IVA. Good luck, Paul. :) |
thanks paul , prob good advise , the kingfisher has the full chassis , I was researching vw chassis online and saw the main tube , im very confused as to why the log book has no mention of the donor car , it just states "2 axle rigid body " then "kingfisher " and " clasicle veheicle " ??

I have PM'd you a copy of the relevant page of my V5C. My car was built and first registered in 1984 and as you say there is no mention of the donor vehicle, the only reference is to the Vin number of the original Beetle and to it's date of manufacture. I think this was standard practice in the 80's although I think that such body conversions these days do retain the original manufacturers name as the Make and reflect the rebodied car as it is in the model description. |
It does sound like the Kingfisher was correctly registered back then under the old system. If you want to rebody that car without doing any mods to the chassis you should be ok. You will need to do the paperwork for a new rebody and that will be it.
On the other hand, using the chassis from the unregistered Countach complete with V12 engine and swopping the id across from the VW based Kingfisher is obviously outside the scope of a rebody ! |
Countach onto the beetle pan was not unknown. Is a rebody,no?
Then, later after registering put the v12 in and just change the engine details. Iffy, I know. |
