Car off to Body Shop for final prep
I took the car to the body shop today for the fat arch fitting, final prep and priming.

I am going to leave it in primer for the IVA as that gives me more options later.

The body is a pain to get right and the final set up is difficult to achieve, I can only hope the body shop can improve on the general finish.

I am determined to push hard for the IVA as soon as possible now as there is little to do to be ready but the confidence needed to commit to the test is the delaying aspect.

Mark's comment last time I spoke to him, was that you should plan for a re-test as they will tell you what is needing to be changed and you just do as they request.

Engine started easily after 12 month of inactvity which was nice.

I will post some finished prep pictures to detail the progress next week when I get the car back.

Fat 'arse' sorry ARCH Update

Car came back from the paint shop today so I have some progress shots of the fat arch look post primer.

Was it really June when it went? I have been working so its best in someone else’s works shop while I am busy.

As you can see from the pictures I have modified the front as well as the back. I like the wide mouth and the strong spoiler. The spoiler will be sheathed in Carbon Fibre come the end to give a crisp clean line.

The headlights are bracketed all I need to do it complete the wiring.

The rear arches were modelled on Elise 111s rear wheels and tyres (17x7.5 225/45R17) and they fill the wheel arch fully to IVA requirements you can see where that's headed..

Big push to the test now, hope you like the result.

What colour shall I do the final finish in is a big problem.....

I have only shown one side but rest assured the other side is identical...

Coming along very nice John. Very smooth finish and like the idea of the bracketed headlamps.

I'm looking at the arch extensions in a long run as well. Together with body shop work. Hope it comes anywhere near as good as the finish you have. Few jobs to do first though.

A quick one I noticed. The rear number plate plimth. I was told that was not SVA compliant. So not sure if it will be IVA compliant. It also says that in the Marlin price list.

As for colour. Only you can decide as everybody has there preference. Difficult one I agree. Took my ages to decide.

My car went through the SVA at Taunton with the numberplate infill as above.

You may well have IVA problems with the number plate holder as is (it will depend on the tester) basically the rear number plate holder must have space for the number plate and gap around it without being recessed.. Goodness knows why. But easy solution get a sheet of thin Ali, cut it to the size the IVA manual says and make sure the edge is radius (e.g. rubber trim) and then mount over the top. You will see on the photos on my site what I did to get around it.

Am interested where your exhaust mounts is it well below that number plate, were you an early chassis, mine comes through exactly where the number plate holder is.

Did you mod the dash at all? I made the dash binnicle detachable which has been great since as I have access to all the key parts underneath.

I'm working on bodywork too at the moment, I'm trying an interesting approach with the screen scuttle to get a fit I like and also fit the hood at the same time. I also have fat rear arch's to fit at somepoint. Like the line you have got with them.

I am interested in your reg plate solution but historic links to your build site don't work, can you post a fresh link please?

I custom re-built an Elise sport exhaust to make it fit on my K series so nothing is like it seems from the external picture.

My chassis is also modified to hold the rear together and the original cross frame has gone.

I have not modified the dash in any way.

The body-shop fabricator is an artist however, he was pleased to see it out of his workshop. It did present him with major construction issues round the joint.

I will post some pictures of a Lotus wheel in the arch and some shots of the exhaust for you out of interest.

Exhaust mounting and all that

You expressed and interest in the exhaust and how it was mounted so as I have just fitted it as the final fit towards the test I thought I would post a couple of pictures.

The Rover outlet manifold is modified first to take the entry to the Cat further over towards the wheel side. I have a Lotus S2/MG TF Cat bypass but the Cat, complete with the bend in are very expensive so I have manufactures a custom bend, adaptor pipe to allow the much cheaper Rover Cat to be fitted for the emissions testing.

The rear box is a lightweight Lotus Elise S2 Sports box I got cheap of eBay and is 'cut and shut' modified to mount vertically the other side of my custom rear frame and the outlet pipes nicely curl down to miss the underside of the body. You may notice the custom clam hangers too, I have to relieve a shade out of the underside of the n/s one to get the clearance I needed. You are allowed a 150mm exhaust 'extension beyond the last vertical body piece' before it fails the IVA, I am at 130mm. A small modification to the rear clam ensures this measurement without interpretation by the way.

All that was left to do was hang it firmly and we are up and running... That should be enough rubber mounts to stop is touching anywhere...

The rear under-body skirt (that nobody fits normally)can still be fitted to hide the box hanging below the body line more brackets to be made later....

A little trimming and tweaking (and bending) on the hangers and it should be good to go..

This install works for me it may not work for other's its just another solution for the kit.
