Another SAMMIO project

While I am awaiting the finances to mould the ALPHA I have started a new build.:icon_rolleyes:
Stoneleigh was a good show but there was nothing "different" on offer and I do like to be "different" .

However at Stoneleigh I and many other folks noticed a nice BUGATTI type 35 in the car park (built around a VW beetle) and I just happen to have a BUGATTI body, along with a Triumph Herald based chassis and a Mk1 2lt six pot engine so I placed them all togeather to see what they look like. :pop2:

First the engine was placed on the chassis as it would have to be mounted well back to fit under the narrow 35 body.
The seat was to measure the leg room needed.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psm9snaa0t.jpg.

Then the body was laid over the engine, hard against the front turrets to get the front wheels looking correct.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pseoxetknj.jpg
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1qcgus0f.jpg

Then the boat tail rear was lifted into place.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psle70xqwp.jpg

Overall I am pleased with the way it's looking :pop2:
But it needs a larger set of wire wheels so can anyone help:icon_rolleyes:?

Micky1Mo - It looks like you certainly have the makings of something interesting there.

Although you will need to do something to disguise the "modern" front end.

I remember Mister Towed posting this photo on your Moss Monaco thread.

http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/...pskfem92ab.jpg

Perhaps you could build some sort of "hybrid", rather than a "pure" 35 replica.

Either way, good luck, Paul. :)

That Mercedes is gorgeous Paul ..the Auto Union stuff from same period equally amazing ..I really like those Teal bodies , if that's what it is , open wheeled race cars are real Boys Own stuff ...love them..

About 3 years ago I built this little open wheeled Roadster around a Triumph chassis ...

I like the Bugatti look, I agree the front suspension kinda does spoil it. However if you where to add a nose similar to a Maserati 8 cl, it would be in keeping, and cover all the suspension bit.
And it needs some much bigger diameter wheels.

micky1mo 13th May 2016 19:43

Spent the last few days working on the car.
Cut the bonnet to get some access to the engine bay.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psdvfxqlqj.jpg

Fabricated and fitted engine mounts after deciding where to along the chassis to place the engine.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psroicigcb.jpg
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psf8mtvym2.jpg

The steering and gearbox are also in place ( note the short prop shaft), I have also added some steel frame work to the cockpit..
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psodbrnjbv.jpg

The pedals are also in place but I forgot to load the camera.

I'v been after some bigger wheels for it and E-bay turned up some 19" wheels which might be a little big but they where the right price.

I'll be working on the Sportster for the rest of the week trying to get it ready for Beaulieu Spring Autojumble next weekend as I have to met a Dutch guy with a stack of cash who's "very interested" :whoo:

beam front axle would have look nice....19s sound right ...nice

micky1mo 1st April 2017 19:25

This BUGATTI 35 project has been coming along well and is actually a lot further forward that it looks but I have not uploaded the latest photos yet !:icon_rolleyes:

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1tgav9m3.jpg

The 19" wheels with 19x600 cross-plys really suit it, although driving it will be a real struggle !!!. :help:
The classic style hand brake was fairly simple to fit , once I had found one, but getting it to operate smoothly was a completely different story!!

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psyybtrcid.jpg

I have now learnt to my cost that a Triumph 2500 gearbox will fit a Vitesse Mk1 engine but the clutch won't operate.
Having built the car's frame work around the engine and gearbox removing the offending gearbox is proving difficult to say the least :frusty:

So, does any one have a Vitesse Mk1 gearbox for sale??:eusa_whistle:

Do you know why not? I'd have thought it was a question of insufficient throw. I had this problem with my first Phaeton which had a Ford Cortina master cylinder and a Triumph Spitfire slave. Curing it was simply a matter of having a spacer machined to go between the slave's piston and the reaction rod.

Regards, Mick

I love it when people talk dirty on here.

Paul L 2nd April 2017 17:52

Micky1Mo - The 19 inch wheels make a big difference.

Is this going to be a one-off build, or the start of a new range?

Good luck, Paul. :)

I think I'll get the Alpha up and running first but the idea was always there.:gossip:

micky1mo 8th April 2017 16:39

Problem gearbox is now removed but lack of space is making thing difficult.:eusa_wall:

Nice project , can I ask what was the source of your handbrake.

Looks about right for my project ? i was thinking I would be looking for old bus/commercial ?

regards Paul

micky1mo 9th April 2017 08:23

Hi paul_n The source of this hand brake was the back of a mate's garage :jaw:

I spent months looking for something suitable to use, so good luck in your quest

micky1mo 12th April 2017 19:19

Vitesse gearbox now in place, just hope the clutch works this time around.:eusa_pray:

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psdwbtcsal.jpg

Had to move the engine forward 30mm so the bellhousing and clutch slave cylinder would clear the body work.

Exhaust now refitted.
I kept it simple just a 45mm downpipe into a Janspeed silencer with twin 34mm exit tubes, sound really nice. :thumb:
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psw49sluln.jpg
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psvlgroqdl.jpg

Finished the dash layout as well.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3eyscufb.jpg

Just waiting for the prop shaft to be shorten down to 560mm's. :eyebrows:

micky1mo 18th June 2017 17:17

The car now starts, runs, drives and stops so it's just about ready for the MOT.
The main hold-up is the great DVLA :frusty:

Fitted mudguard to keep the MOT tester happy.
The 19" wire wheels really set it off, I just hope it drives OK on them :icon_confused:

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pshwg8bdj9.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5dbogo7e.jpg

The seat has worked out really well.
http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psh1kgkgr7.jpg

It simply hinges forward on a pair of gate hinges give access to the rear load area.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psmkbi7lj3.jpg

I finished the rear mudguards today and fitted the usual marker light on the front wings. but forgot the up-load the photos :nerd:

redratbike 18th June 2017 17:31
