How about an MR2 based McLaren ?

http://oi67.tinypic.com/35l99uv.jpg

stevieg 20th February 2016 12:50

I'm a bit of a long term lurker on these forums and watching the various builds with interest, I've owned a couple of MX-5s (one heavily modified turbo charged MK1 and a lightly modified MK2.5).

Back when Simpson Design and Retroforza were the limited options for a retro modded MX-5 (along with various JDM wonders such as Pit Crew and the like) I suggested to Jim Simpson a more 70s / 80s style kit and did the shop below:

http://i66.tinypic.com/294ma0j.jpg

Jim is firmly in the 60s styling camp and wasn't keen, Chris might consider it though.

Should be a fairly simple kit (nose, wings, bonnet, rear wings, boot and rear bumper) and you get to keep the pop-up head lights.

It would have been nice if Toyota made the MR2 like that in the first place ! Its only down to the shape of the panels at the end of the day. Once tooling is set up you can make any shapes you like for your production car. Costs would be largely the same for a crap looking MR2 or the proposal here !

Lucky@LeMans 20th February 2016 14:52

Looking again , you might have something ! New extended front section , new rear end section and roof panel.

No more than a weekends work for Tribute !

Yes please!

DaveP 20th February 2016 22:58

Not sure if this is a good suggestion but made me smile

What about one of these ?

It looks like what an unskilled builder like me if they did a KOBRA :)

Can anyone see this?

Personally I find the MR2 short wheelbase and lack of width means that most of the ferrari/modern supercar style kits look wrong in proportion.

Mikewade 21st February 2016 10:52

I believe that the MR2 is 1695mm wide, and the 675 is 2095.
So the difference is 400mm or about 16" in old money - quite a lot wider on a narrow country lane.
For comparison a Dino is 1703.

You scale it down to about 80% to keep the proportions right. That idea has worked with other kits such as the Teal Type 35 ( scaled up )and Vincent Riley ( scaled down ) etc.

I would like to see something like the Alfa junior earlier in the thread which i think is gorgeous. Something that can be built on a low cost mx5. A modern interpretation like manufactures have done with the beetle and mini. The junior and some others in the similar idea.

The alfa Junior

zagmad 22nd February 2016 22:30

Would look good on th z3. And panels would be easily off and on able. The harder lines would would with the angle of the windscreen.

rjbell 23rd February 2016 05:37

After you mentioned the z3 I went and read about it. All the panels bolt on even the rear panels. That's good to know. I think you're right it would make a perfect donor.

The escort MK1 inspired design would work on a mk1 audi tt i think. The design is almost there already with the wheel arches. Just need to square up the front and back bumpers adding the escort front grill and bonnet. Finish it off with some cool wheels and graphics.

Redandy 23rd February 2016 11:39

I'd have thought the Escort would sit nicely on a BMW 1 series coupe (albeit a pricey donor just now). Imagine an M135 Escort-alike. mmmm.

Or a suzuki Kizashi with a manual box swap and a remap. 4wd mmmmm. also pricey just now.

I do have a day job, the thing is while others spend their free moments on FaceBook, Twitter or reading the paper I prefer to dabble a while on the PhotoShop.

Danny_HUFC 24th February 2016 19:19

Its a good job! Zagmad keeps you busy....

zagmad 28th February 2016 09:12

Last one for the month. Iso grifo with the Alfa grill. Do like this one as it has the sloping back and similar tail lights to the Alfa. I prefer the one that had the grill without the bar in the middle and the headlights covered slightly at the top.

y cymro 28th February 2016 09:41

No picture showing Zag. Here you go

Roadster 28th February 2016 09:52

You do choose some pretty cars Zag

Ive built many cars, some I have stuck to my original vision and some gained a life of their own through the build.
The ones that start to make themselves always end up better, their curves and form are more natural.

I really liked the shape your first idea was at - the rear screen and boot area you just couldn't have drawn.

You have a group of parts, soon to include a chopped and shortened Mk1 Escort roof. I would mock them up and see where you are, I think it might surprise you.

zagmad 28th February 2016 12:03

Think once the lower panels are set and placed the roof line will fall into place. Really like the Maserati gt Sebring roofline. I think the other panels will help finish it off as have a window kit from the Alfa which can be shortened

y cymro 28th February 2016 21:22

Tribute HQ, with Chris and Dan in the foreground, gets increasingly full of Zagmad's prototypes

Chris is heard to shout 'we're going to need more rooves at this rate'

I wouldn't build the one in the middle, it might get cruelly compared to a shoe box on top of a cornflakes packet styled in Russia. ;)

For any lurkers out there I thought I'd better add that I rather like boxy Italian saloons and will defend their honour if criticised, I have no particular allegiance or animosity towards any kit manufacturer or build agent, and I am really looking forward to seeing project Mxico come together, no matter who builds it. I think it's a brilliant idea.

smash 29th February 2016 12:14

Yes, yes - but where do you stand on Brexit? :)

WorldClassAccident 29th February 2016 13:19

Must be an Italian factory, the floor has rusted through already on the first bay

Oh don't go there !

I want to see and hear about great looking cars - not the EU mass debate.

Dave :)

y cymro 29th February 2016 19:55

I agree that some boxy Italian saloons are great. This one by Alfaholics is my favourite

Roadster 29th February 2016 20:20

I love the stance, it would look great black with cromodoro magnesium wheels.

zagmad 2nd March 2016 15:49

Hmm what about the Alfa Romeo giuletta sprint 1960 with the gtv front grill. Looking at sloped roofs instead of the roof line it has.

Triumph Special 4th March 2016 20:12

I know it's a VERY well trodden path in the kit car world, but I'd be interested in a Z3-based Healey 3000 replica. Slim GRP bumpers could replace the chrome ones, blending the old and new. I'd want the standard Z3 doors retained with no extra skin.

y cymro 4th March 2016 22:59

The JWE Thruxton body is available for around a grand and may fit after modification

zagmad 11th March 2016 18:01

I were thinking. How bout the Alfa gt with outline of the roof of the escort say from the b pillar back with Alfa windows placed back over it. Bin looking at it from different angles and may fit the bill. Any ideas dsg4me? I know not how to cut and paste and blend.

Saw one of these tooling around Tynemouth the other weekend. Very smooth. Nice understated but recognisable sound as well.

zagmad 11th March 2016 19:00

This might me worth think about adapting to a stripped Mercedes base. I'm sure you'll have loads of free time soon Chris when every other project is finished!!
