Miglia Chassis Choice

Hi

I like the look and finish on the miglia but looking around for a donor there is not a lot about, so my question is can a spitfire chassis be used?

Welcome to the forum Swifty.
Your enquiry has come at just the right time as I believe the Miglia boys are literally just about to do a Spitfire based version.
I look forward to seeing how well the Miglia proportions work on the shorter wheelbase.
The Cordite / Pilot works well enough , so I am sure it will work equally as well.

swifty 18th December 2013 21:52

So the spitfire has a shorter wheel base, by how much?

pee wee 19th December 2013 06:45

about 200mm I think.
It will be crucial to the proportions whereabouts the car is shortened.

mike

thanks clive

Hi Clive we are taking orders already, first body will be going out the door in Febuary. I will sort something out with you as you have already bought a Miglia speedster. Happy Christmas

I believe that the Herald wheelbase is approx. 91ins. In view of the fact that these cars are getting harder to find has a more modern option every been considered? I'm looking to start a project in the new year and I have been considering 3 options. The Miglia being one of them.
From my research I have been drawn to the MX5. Many available good donors at reasonable money. Wheelbase just over 89ins. Is this a possible option to consider. Good engine, gearbox and handling. Body can be totally removed leaving a rolling frame. If a space frame was designed to go around it and the body can go onto this. No IVA, as this will be classed as a re body, on current regulations. This could be a pretty interesting machine.
Your comments, suggestions, opinions on this will be appreciated.

scimjim 19th December 2013 19:57

unfortunately the mx5 "backbone" isn't a chassis - and as such the VIN is attached to the monocoque bodyshell so it wouldn't be a rebody.

the Reliant SS1 however.....:becky:

mikmiglia 19th December 2013 20:01

Good Evening,

Well mx5 s always going to be a obvious choice for a donor for move kit cars, and when i get bored one day i will also build a new car based on an mx5.

The problem is with removing the mx5 body you are left with two sub frames and
a ladder link section between the front and back with the prop shaft.

This is not a chassis, so making your own frame and fitting a grp body would need an iva test. A nice thought and would be a nice way to go with the Miglia range.

Rudycob1 19th December 2013 20:33

Hi Mike
I'm assuming the 'backbone' you get out of the MX isn't enough to class as a chassis, so using the point system:
• chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points
• suspension = 2 points
• axles = 2 points
• transmission = 2 points
• steering assembly = 2 points
• engine = 1 point

(and that you must score 8 or more points to not require an IVA)

If the above is correct, than shouldn't this be enough not to need the IVA test as using all the above components will score 9 points.
What's your opinion on this. Could be a fantastic additional option to the current range and very cost effective when you take into consideration what car you will end up with. If that is not enough, look at all the upgrade options that are available for the MX engine range.

Paul L 19th December 2013 20:50

Rudycob1 - I've just copied the following from the rules, but added the red highlight...

"Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame."

So unfortunately, you just can't add up the other stuff to make 9.

This is why Miglia, Ribble & Tribute build their various kits the way they do.

Hope that helps, Paul. :)

scimjim 19th December 2013 20:53

if you don't use the chassis it requires an IVA.

edit - beaten by Paul ;)

Paul L 19th December 2013 20:55

mikmiglia - Good luck with the Spitfire version of your kit.

I look forward to seeing what it looks like.

Cheers, Paul. :)

Rudycob1 19th December 2013 22:03

Thanks for the clarification of the IVA rules. Shame as it would have been a great option. I look forward to seeing the Spitfire version as well.
