Barry Mays Formosa 120 GR build

A few years back , whilst under the S*mmio banner , Mike and myself put together a car for Barry using a very early example , rebodied , doors cut etc. and finished in Ecosse blue with a distinctive tailfin ...it changed hands and Rattler's son in law now has custody of it ,minus the tailfin , I believe ...anyway ...Barry just like Mr Kotter is back !!

He has asked me to put together an SE5 exampled Formosa 120 GR for him ...

This morning he arrived with this on his trailer ...

This one is staying 3 litre / manual so will be another variation on whats gone before ....

I managed to get a couple of hours in , stripping seats , doors and starting to chop away at the body ...but more pics to follow as it progresses ..

I always liked the tail fin versions of the Sammios.

Unfortunately, this is the best photo of Barry’s previous car that I can find.

As the ones with it finished seem to have been lost. :icon_sad:

I've stripped the car down , interior out , body in about a dozen bin bags chopped into pieces and a few bits put to one side ....

The chassis isn't too bad ...its had a repair or two before and wants a couple of bits of welding ...but generally pretty good ...

http://preview.ibb.co/kDcLVx/IMG_20180223_114026.jpg

I've pulled the fuel tank out , dropped the twin exhaust off, propshaft , stripped the brake pipes out etc. removed the towbar ! and pulled the engine and gearbox out , stripping the mounts from the chassis as well ...

http://preview.ibb.co/fYu0Vx/IMG_20180223_114048.jpg

The engine was put back in the chassis and moved backwards ...the key measurement is the gear stick position in relation to the drivers seat ...The gearstick needs to be positioned about 48'' from the centre line of the rear axle ...It' meant the engine and box has to go back about 6 '' from it's stock mounting point ..everything clears ok ...no trimming or tweaking required from what I can see ...so re-instating the mounts should be all that is required ...The tubular bolt in crossmember that sits under the sump can easily be slid back too as the rails are parallel at that part of the chassis ...

lancelot link 28th February 2018 16:20

Bit more achieved this week ....

I have re-instated the engine mounts approx 4'' back , this was less than I first thought and gives me more room for the linkages etc without chopping the chassis to bits which is a big no/no...
I also refabricated the gearbox mount using the original bolt on mount , still bolts in place but through 2 angled brackets as opposed to straight into the rail now ...this is because the chassis tapers narrower as it goes back ...its and easy fix though and the engine mounts pretty much line themselves up when using a matched set of Ford engine mounts ...

http://preview.ibb.co/ksgXJH/IMG_20180226_150534.jpg

I did a couple of repairs to the outriggers and put new boxed out rail sections on to replace the open channel stock versions ..neater and stronger ..

http://preview.ibb.co/dnOjXc/IMG_20180227_161404.jpg

I then made a strut brace as the car came without one and fitted it with a couple of extra plates in place to start figuring out the framework.

http://preview.ibb.co/nHTMdH/IMG_20180228_161931.jpg

I finished the afternoon off by cutting the propshaft down and re-instating the cast u/j piece back in and fully welding it ... this has temporarily been fitted back on the car ...

If you're self employed you just have to !!!!!

Even my crappy little fan heater is enough to take the worst of the chill off in 15 minutes. I was out there for a couple of hours last night !

lancelot link 1st March 2018 13:17

only an hour or so today ...taken the opportunity to do a bit of running around but have thrown the towel in now ....when the steel is so cold you genuinely can't hold it , your teeth are chattering and the only pleasure you are getting is when you fire the grinder sparks into yourself ...it's time to go ...

Very true ...might have to look after Sam(mio) tomorrow as schools shut and Jennette covered today ....so will probably be working all weekend to catch up ......

lancelot link 30th March 2018 10:55

Barry has the first long nose produced from the mould rather than modified ....

http://preview.ibb.co/jBvMQS/IMG_20180329_112618.jpg

Did some more work on his frame yesterday ..some pictures to follow.....

lancelot link 30th March 2018 20:11

http://preview.ibb.co/hCOWS7/IMG_20180330_092418.jpg

I have welded up a basic frame , the floor sections were done a few weeks back , but added the tubes this week ...its a perimeter frame only so far ..no hinge mounts , tank mounts etc....

http://preview.ibb.co/m9zufS/IMG_20180330_092442.jpg

I have clamped a body roughly in place but won't fix it until I have the wheels on ...the car currently has an odd , tiny wheel on the rear passenger side with more inset than stock ...its throwing all the measurements out , when trying to line the body up on the arches etc.... All frame measurements were taken from the stock Scimitar chassis - and even they aren't 100% accurate from the factory !

Following pic shows plenty of clearance on a V6 in a Scimitar chassis when the engine is moved back a few inches ...

molleur 30th March 2018 20:23

Nice work!

lancelot link 11th April 2018 07:07

I have started creating Barry's bulkhead . He wants to keep it all Scimitar , on the other Scimitar build I used Triumph pedals , this one is using the larger Scimitar cluster ...this meant a tower to support the pedals is being created to support them . The steering will have to take a slightly different route on this one ..but its all good ...

http://preview.ibb.co/bRJosH/IMG_20180409_172524.jpg

http://preview.ibb.co/dXO4XH/IMG_20180409_172511.jpg

There is a bit more to do , but until I work out the steering route I won't add the final bracing in case it clashes with the path it takes ..

lancelot link 11th April 2018 18:15

BIT MORE FRAMEWORK UNDER BONNET DONE TODAY....

The Lotus Radiator has been mounted onto some inner wing style brace bars that are bolted to the strut tops....

http://preview.ibb.co/m0jzHH/IMG_20180411_171610.jpg

I need to tackle the steering next ...

lancelot link 18th April 2018 17:14

Steering and pedals sorted on the car now ...a replacement TR6 u/j was used and the column stretched slightly to get it in the right place , but relatively straightforward ...

I fitted Barry's Locost style aluminium fuel tank ...its about a 6.5-7 gallon tank , so couple of hundred mile radius ...big enough for this car ...it's hanging from the rear frame and has a brace bar running underneath it too ...it will come out through a hatch in the rear bulkhead ..

http://preview.ibb.co/ioDmSS/IMG_20180417_153045.jpg

pictured with body roughly back in position , gives a better idea of how it fits ...cap will be centred using flexi rubber hose ...

http://preview.ibb.co/kUby7S/IMG_20180417_153301.jpg

I managed to get the stock handbrake and cable stop mounted too ...this is easily removable and not welded into the frame for ease of maintainence etc...

http://preview.ibb.co/nNChZ7/IMG_20180417_153315.jpg

The cables will be lifted off the prop and secured at a later date ...

Ray is down tomorrow painting his frame ..so I will lower the rear of his car
( did the front today )and then stay out of his way ...so will probably start mounting Barry's bonnet and first fix of body etc...

lancelot link 25th April 2018 20:28

Bonnet mounts made ....

Started mapping out rear bulkhead with fuel tank hatch as well ....

Fuel cap fitted as well and my pattern headlight buckets fitted until correct ones arrive ....

lancelot link 2nd May 2018 18:07

I forgot to take a picture , but Barry's inner wings are now fully glassed in place ...
I have also stretched the lower wing section for him ...

https://preview.ibb.co/fuC5eS/317844...29118976_n.jpg

both sides done but can't get a decent pic of the passenger side ...

https://preview.ibb.co/hqTdzS/317471...26673408_n.jpg

The wire wheels came back from the powder coaters today , I bought some inner tubes and tomorrow will get some 'roller' tyres fitted for Barry , so we can fit the wheels , roll it outside and get it ready for Barry to collect ...

lancelot link 4th May 2018 21:30

I did the final few jobs on Barry's car today ..fitted his wheels , tweaked the body , bonnet etc. made some bushes for the hinges and cut the steel floorpans out but didn't fit them ...

Barry wants to take on the build from this point and hopefully , I can continue to update this thread as he progresses ...

He is collecting the car early next week ...

Barry sent me some pictures of his old blue S*mmio in our communication's today ...

I will get the F-120GR outside over the weekend and take some better pictures of it before Barry takes it on ...

lancelot link 8th May 2018 18:19

Pictures of Barry's car ...he's collecting this weekend and going to finish the car himself ...
