Sammio Spyder For sale
 

Hi all.
I am selling my Spyder, it was a 'father and son' project but he is too young to insure to drive it. I am after advice about the value of the car and the best place to advertise it, apart from the obvious ebay. I can't find any for sale at present, so have little idea about what people ask/actually get for their cars.
We have Spyder 129, 1971 13/60 based with a type 9 5speed conversion. It is finished in Triumph Cherry Red with black seats and carpet and has had various new parts fitted during the build. It has a proper swing spring conversion with the uprated front roll bar, Canley lowered front springs and 1" lowering block on the back. Spitfire steel wheels and new tyres. It will have a years MOT and tax (depending on how quick it sells but free anyway) It is correctly registered with an updated log book.

Any advice would be welcome, I am thinking of asking £5250.

If it's in any way decently built I would expect someone to bite your arm off at that price.

A few complete cars have been sold and the prices have really reflected the condition/standard of build. A scruffy doer upper with an mot went on ebay for about £3,500 last year, while a turnkey Miglia Speedster built by Mike for a German customer reportedly sold at a classic car auction for e32,000.

I have no intention of selling mine, but if someone made me an offer in the £15k to £20k ballpark I'd be tempted to part with it and build another.

It sounds like you've made some choice upgrades so I wouldn't sell it short, but it would be nice if we could see some pictures to help us give you some guidance...

Steve - If you are not in any great rush to sell, I'd wait until the warm sunny weather returns when demand will be higher.

Similarly, why not start by asking for a much higher price and take a lower one later on if you have to?

Is sounds like you have a good car with all the paperwork in order and have picked a colour buyers like.
( It's not know as "resale red" for nothing. :icon_wink:)

Hi all.
Its a nice day today so will be taking photos when i get home from work.
I hadn't realised that they can go for so much money. I will be looking to value it for a quicker sale so we can start a project that we can insure my son for. Thinking of something like a Dolomite. But, I do agree, i dont really want to give it away. Personally, I get put off by people asking silly money for something. But if they are not offended by an 'offer', I guess its not a problem.

Who did you go to for your insurance quotes?

If it was a mainstream broker/insurer, try calling round the specialists. I use 'A' Plan insurance myself - they really know what they're talking about and, more importantly, they also knew what I was talking about when I called them. I know I'm an old duffer but £93 comprehensive is a pretty good price imho.

It'd be worth checking to see if they can find you some cover for your son on a low mileage basis at a reasonable price rather than have to sell your car and start another project.

Feel really impressed with myself now, after sorting these photos out. Everyone else went to bed and left me alone with this scary pc!

Are they Land Rover middle seats by any chance? They fit really well.

Having seen it now, I'd be asking rather more than your original suggestion. If it doesn't sell during the summer take it to Goodwood Revival and put it in the classics car park with an 'offers around £10,000' sign on it and you might just get a serious offer. :)

Just noticed it's got no side mirrors. How'd you get it through the mot?

Hi Towed. According to the MoT manual, cars used before 1st August 1978 must have 'at least One mirror/device in any of the acceptable positions:
a. an exterior mirror or device that provides a view along the offside of the vehicle
b. an exterior mirror or device that provides a view along the nearside of the vehicle
c. an interior mirror or a device which provides a view to the rear of the vehicle.

Are those LED rear number plate lights? If so, are they any good?
( As I've got a set of 4 for my build, but wasn't sure about fitting them. )

I'd suggest some plastic end caps for the open box section behind the seats.

Finally, I would love to see this car selling for closer to £10k, than £5k.

Given that i've been through the hassle of selling one of these i thought it worth adding my 2p :)

I found that the vast majority of buyers/enquiries were from people who knew what they were looking at and they had done their homework.
So by-and-large it's quite a different and pleasant selling experience compared to selling a 'normal' car, although obviously expect the occasional chancer :)

Be VERY wary of swapping it, especially for another kit car, as people try and off-load incorrectly registered vehicles that way!

From keeping an eye on the prices these have gone for over the past few years i'd expect a nice example of a 13/60 based car to go for between £4,500 and £6,500 and a Vitesse based car to go for between £5,500 and £8,000 .
Sorry that is not as high as some have mentioned, but those ranges are taken from me being a bit OCD watching what actual cars have sold for.

Yup, there have been a few exceptions to the norm, i.e. My car went to Germany and was then re-listed for £13,000! and a few scruffy ones or incomplete ones have gone for considerably less.

But as my father always used to say, "something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it" and with the weather picking up and the recession starting to fade away, i really do hope that you get a really good price!

Hi all.
Thanks for the nice comments, the insurance issue seems to be entirely to do with age.
They are Land Rover seats, the deluxe version from Exmoor trim. I welded up some square tube to the right angle and then used some generic sliders from one of the kitcar parts suppliers. I spent ages trying to find something that was narrow enough at the top, that didnt jam against the rear corner of the cockpit. In the end, on the drivers side, I cut out the curved section and altered it to allow the seat to move more. I had the seat nice and low to start off by fixing straight to the fibreglass floorpan. There was movement and a creaking noise, so i bonded in some 9mm ply. This stiffened it all up and allowed me to get the floor level.
They are indeed LED number plate lights. I think they look neat and they passed the MOT!
I have to admit that the rear view mirror is naff!! It is a Halfords item that I used when teaching the kids to drive. I havent found anyhting i like yet, but i am still looking, regardless of selling the car.
Again, it passed an MOT!!!
Will find some plastic caps hopefully.

Looks very smart, and a tidy job well done too.

What a shame you are selling the car as you have done the kit Justis, the colour suit the car and the finish is excellent.

Good luck with the sale i am sure you will not have a problem selling this great example.
