Future MOT,s

Took my Sportster down to my local garage to have its MOT today and to purge the air from the brake system and he told me some interesting information which will be of interest to some.

As yet I do not have windscreen wipers, but do have a windscreen. He said that they will have to remove the windscreen for its MOT, because new legislation requires you to have wipers fitted if it has a windscreen. So he is doing that to get it it through its test.

Also, my speedometer only has a small light that illuminates the speedo mileage reading but not the mph part of the dial. He also said next years legislation will require me to have the whole dial illuminated, so if you have new dials you will be ok but if they are from a donor vehicle like mine then they will need to be changed.

Oh, almost forgot to say that he cannot purge the system of air today as his caps do not fit my reservoir, same problem I had. Should sort it Monday. Watch this space.

Hi Dennis, that's useful info for those of us still building but I would have thought you're ok provided your car meets the regulations for when it was registered, otherwise there'll be loads of classic cars that fall foul of retrospectic legislation? The windscreen wiper thing doesn't surprise me as that and demist is an old requirement but the bit about the dials does

Ian,
I didn,t get that impression from the garage owner, I understood it that my car has to be brought up to the VOSA requirements even though it was not built to those standards.
I collected it this morning and he told me that it had passed but keep an eye on the VOSA web site for possible changes in the future.
We will have to comply but as you say that will have a massive impact on classic cars.
I believe Germany,s laws are very stringent and a nightmare for old car owners.
