Fuel Pump
 

Hi, can anyone help ?

I was hoping to start the engine this year but no such luck :frusty:

The engine turns over but spotted that the fuel pump was not working. I have connected the pump direct to the battery and it works, so not faulty.

I have connected the
green and yellow marlin wire to yellow rover wire.
green marlin from ignition to white which becaomes green and pink

Although the power goes to the relays it does not come back down the green and yellow wire when the key is turned.

I guess there is always next year :flypig:

Have you got the fuel pump inertia swich upright and mounted, also puch the top centre to make sure it has not clicked out as it should do it the case of an accident. Also see if the power stops there, and if so, bridge it with some wire as a temporary measure.

I am assuming you are building a K or T series, otherwise this comment maynot be relavant.

Ok things to check. Turn on ignition and check for 12V on the green wire. Should also get 12V on the Green/Pink at both the ECU connector and fuel pump relay.

If this is ok, it could be that the ECU is doing it's normal job. It just primes for 3 seconds until it knows engine is cranking. For testing purposes, connect the Black/Purple from the replay to Earth (instead of the ECU doing it.) If all is well, with the ignition on, you should read 12V at the Green/Yellow wire. Also check you have 12V on the Brown/Grey wire. This should be live even without the ignition.

and yes I am making the turbo version or rather I have been trying for the last four years !

could it be a faulty relay ? I think there are four wires associated with the pump that go to the relay.

brown & white - permanent live
green & pink - switched live from second position on ignition key
yellow - goes to fuel pump - no power before or when turning the key
Black & Purple from MEMS (?) box - no power before or when turning the key

Earthing the black purple while ignition is on, is forcing the relay to work. Providing you have a 12V perm on the brown/white (sorry, I mentioned brown grey in the last post), should get 12v at the green/yellow.

If the relay is faulty, assuming there the same as the K series I have one spare which i know is OK. Mine has two plugs, and is tapered shape.

Hi Steve, after spending all day on this I think it may be the relay that is at fault.

Sounds like you have exactly what I need, where are you ? or maybe you could post it and I send you a cheque. How much do you want for it ?

John (Limpabit) has offered to pop down on Saturday to help me and it would be good if I could get one for then. Alternatively I can send my very understanding wife down to the breakers with a spanner as I have to go into work this week.

Does the Rover turbo fuel pump relay have any unusual features, or is it just a standard relay?

It's the same as the K series. A little black box with 4 relays in it.

I went through it over the phone. The fuel pump is now working but manually earthed the relay instead of ECU. It seems to be a problem with the main relay that supplies the ECU.

Nick try this.

Plug ECU and relay pack back in. Check voltages again on the brown/pink at the coil.

Also have you connected the earths from the engine loom? From memory, there's 2 blacks in the engine loom.

Hi John, I did check brown and pink at the coil but nothing.

Will need to check where I have earthed as I can't remember but do not have any let over wires from the engine loom.

Did you check the brown/pink at the coil while ECU was plugged in?

I would also check the blacks on the ECU connector to check you have a good connection to the chassis.

Turns out it was a faulty relay box , thanks to john for identifying the issue and to Steve for supplying a replacement.

I forgot to say (maybe cos I'm too excited)

after changing the relay the engine was fired up for the first time, we slipped her into 5th gear and managed to get 150 mph on the speedo !

great feeling after 4 years !

It's off to Marlin to get the body fitted on Saturday, should only take them a week I'm told. Then I'll have to start thinking about booking the dreaded SVA and tidying up some of the bits.
