Sportscar rally - Sardinia last week in September

Italia-Sardinia 2006 Sportscar Challenge

24-29 September

The Italian sun blessed Mediterranean island of Sardinia is the venue for this five day Reliability Trial open to handbuilt sportscars. A perfect place to enjoy some eager driving in the company of fellow sportscar adventurers.

If you are reading this and have not come across events organised by the Guild of Motor Endurance before then read on, and we hope you will consider joining us. If you have competed with your sportscar before you will have an idea of the motoring challenge that is promised for the last week in September. Reserve your place and book the time off now.

Previous rallies include: 1997 to Morocco, 1999 Targa Florio in Sicily, 2001 Corsica, 2002 Florence, 2004 Morocco and Monte-Carlo in 2005. Guild of Motor Endurance events are for specialist sportscars and all the following cars have competed on past events:

Westfield (winner 1997), Ginetta (winner 1998), Marlin (winner 1999), Robin Hood (winner 2000), Caterham (winner 2001, 2002), Lotus (winner 2004) and Caterham again winning in 2005.

AM Sports, Austin Healey, Autotune Gemini, AZ, Banks Europa, Beauford, Birkin, Blackjack, Bond, BRA, Brightwheel, Buckland, Chesil, Dax Tojeiro, DRK, Dunsmore, Dutton, Embeesea, Fisher, GCS, Gilbern, Grinnall Scorpion, GTM, Hawk, Jester, Liege, Lomax, Martin & Walker, Marcos, Malone, Moss, Nelson, Onyx, Pilgrim Bulldog, Quantum, Ram C-type, Reliant, Renault Spyder, Racecorp, Smart Roadster, Spartan, SSC, Suffolk SS100, Sylva, Teal, Transformer Stratos, Trac, Triad, Triumph, TVR, Triking, Turner & Vindicator. Also specials: Barra, Bellini, Dragoon, DRM, Duckshover, Gilbert, JMB, Oldfield, RTP & Sportster.

The entry fee for the Italia-Sardinia 2006 Sportscar Challenge is £595 per person. This includes five nights bed, breakfast and evening meal at a lovely hotel by Olbia in Sardinia.

An average speed of 30mph for 'touring assemblies' may seem slow, but on tight country roads it is not so easy to maintain. Although high speeds are not what these events are about, Guild of Motor Endurance events should not be thought of as a relaxing tour either.

What is needed to be successful on these type of events is a reliable car that handles well, a good driver, and someone sitting next to you that can stay focused so that you arrive at where you are supposed to be within a given period of time. Also required for endurance is an element of determination to finish, regardless. Competitors keep coming back and the camaraderie when they get together has much to do with it.

Sportscars are designed to be driven competitively and Sardinia is just the place for it. If you own a sportscar and would like to enter, or be placed on the mailing list, please contact the event Secretary:

Bulletin 2

Italia-Sardinia 2006 Sportscar Challenge

24-29 September

Bulletin 2 – 23rd May

The 2006 route recce has now been completed and 2500km of the most amazing roads will face the competitors on the Italia-Sardinia in the last week of September.

Sardinia has just too many incredible smooth tarmac roads, absolutely perfect for an endurance rally. For this reason the planned off road sections have been left out. That said, the Italia-Sardinia 2006 five day route will still be one of the most demanding sportscar challenges to date.

Many participants enjoy Guild of Motor Endurance events for the tour element, for 2006 it’s a wonderful opportunity to see so much of this beautiful Italian island of Sardinia. Five adventurous days will be a really pleasant way to spend an mediterranean touring holiday.

Please bear in mind that the entry fee increases on the 1st June. If you haven't already entered, or are undecided, it’s time to make your mind up. This is really not the one to miss.

If you are entering, you will need to book your overnight return ferry to Sardinia. The ideal crossing is with Moby Lines from Genova to the Port of Olbia in Sardinia. Depart 23 Sept 22.00, return 29 Sept 22.00. Book on-line: Moby Lines: www.mobylines.de Booking ferry by telephone: 0049 611-14020. However, if this crossing to Olbia becomes fully booked other crossings to Sardinia are available with alternative companies.

Having one hotel for five nights (bed, breakfast and evening meal included) means there won’t be any need to carry luggage in the car. The hotel is also by the sea with a bar, restaurant, and pool to recover in each evening. As for the weather, it's going to be hot.

We have had enquiries from drivers wishing to enter, requiring co-drivers/navigators, if you are interested please let us know and we will put you in contact.

The following is a list of entries received as at the 23rd May, a further ten entries have verbally confirmed, so there are still places available.

SSC wins Italia-Sardinia 2006

Italia-Sardinia 2006 Sportscar Challenge 24-29 September

Congratulations to Mike Messenger and Daan Rens on winning a tough Italia-Sardinia 2006 in their 1800 Zetec SSC. Second overall, and winner of the 2000cc class, after leading for much of the event, was again James Miles in his Turbo Cosworth self made Sportster, with navigator Roger Turner.

Congratulations also to class winners Richard Winter & Nick Pakes taking the 1000cc class in their Smart Roadster. Reuben Alcock & Caroline Alcock, on their first endurance rally, winning the 1600cc class in a Westfield, and Francie Clarkson & Clare Owen winning the over 2000cc class in a Caterham.

The results also show that only first, second, and third placed crews (3rd overall: Gordon Hick and Brad Snow in their 2000 Zetec Fisher Fury) reached every control and attained Gold. The only Silver went to Richard Winter & Nick Pakes, missing one control when an off re-shaped their back wheel. And 5th overall Chris Shanahan and Maggie Gough the only Bronze, missing just two controls. Of the remaining cars, ten were Finishers. This is an impressive achievement considering the level of concentration needed to stay on the route and keep on schedule. Results:
