So here's how it currently looks -
http://www.paulward.net/?attachment_id=2125 Hmm - pics aren't showing now on my pc - so here's the link - http://www.paulward.net/?attachment_id=2125 http://www.paulward.net/?attachment_id=2125 here's that engine number - not sure if they are supposed to look like this or not? http://www.paulward.net/?attachment_id=2124 http://www.paulward.net/?attachment_id=2124 http://www.paulward.net/?attachment_id=2124 |
What does it say on your V5?
|
weird - it says 'FMHE' - what does that mean?
|
That's a generic reference to the Spitfire 1500 engine. FM was the prefix and HE the suffix. There would normally be digits in between. It certainly doesn't refer to the engine that you have.

Thanks
|
Got the brake lines fitted today .... and so the brakes now work :)
|
.... and got my old mk 3 spitfire MOT'd ready to sell it.
|
Steering column located and fitted this week and today we got the engine started for the first time :)
|
So today we got the exhaust in place - sounds pretty good! used a mini sports backbox and fabricated a pipe from the down pipe to the backbox
Also, got a set of old MG TF wire wheels from fleabay for £200 - used some specially made longer adapters Recommended by the samio / ribble builders to fit them to the spitfire. hubs http://www.paulward.net/wp-content/u...8/DSC_0611.jpg http://www.paulward.net/wp-content/u...8/DSC_0603.jpg |
so now got my Spitfire up for sale to make room - and cash!! :(

took a short video of when we first started the car with the exhaust fitted - https://youtu.be/um_mPjQjBjc

Car Photographer – That is one serious tail pipe.
Did you get to the bottom of the “crossed out” engine numbers? Good luck, Paul. :) |
Yeah, it's only a cheap mini one off ebay but it sounds great!!
not really, a few people have said it has that mark if it's recon or rebored, but I'm not sure - as long as it goes ok I suppose I'm not bothered thanks |

Here's the listing for it - there's a few pics and a summary of details on the link. I'd priced it fairly high because I was expecting people to try and offer - so I am prepared to move on the price

It probably looks better than it actually is though
|
Got the radiator in now - http://www.paulward.net/wp-content/u...8/DSC_0636.jpg

Love the shape.
We regards the engine numbers, I thought it meant reconditioned. On the http://www.triumphspitfire.com/enginenumbers.html "These engines often had its original number oblitterated by overstamping, usually with the letter 'X' and a special plate rivetted to the block on the vertical face of the boss which carried the original engine number." Is there any other plate on yours? I have been on contact with Fiorano with regards purchasing a kit, not sure at present, what to do with the Miglia and the Vitesse chassis, do I sell and get one of these or attempt the Miglia (anyone interested PM me). |
cheers for the info,
the chassis on these needs to be lengthened slightly so I'm not sure if that would be an issue or not for you on your vitesse chassis, Ironically I really wanted a miglia too before I found this! |
Car Photographer - I saw your DVLA questions on the Tribute tread, so thought I'd post this link here:
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...ead.php?t=5192 As Sammio & Miglia builds (new body on existing chassis) are probably closer to your kit than the Tribute approach (body panels on a monocoque shell). I think the key to your approach to the DVLA will what details are on the existing V5C. Although your last post makes me slightly nervous... "...the chassis on these needs to be lengthened slightly..." As long as this lengthening process is via "something" bolted to the chassis you have a chance. However, if your chassis has been "cut & shut" to make it a few inches longer, then that will be a major problem. The "8 Point rule" allows you to keep the donor Spitfire's registration number provided you have an original, unmodified, chassis. You can make minor chassis alterations (I've cut off old bonnet fixing brackets & welded on new brackets). But you can not make any structural alternations and the new body shell must be bolted into position, not welded. Just to be clear, you can cut & weld a chassis, or build a new one, but then you lose the donor car's identity. ( Which means a different route to getting registered with the DVLA and will include a IVA test. ) Hope that helps, Paul. :) |
