John Webbs SE5 Scimitar based 120 GR

John , the guy I use for my aluminium fabricating has decided to put a couple of Formosa's together with a view to selling them.

He took delivery of his bodyshell , doors and bootlid earlier this week with the stretched bonnet to follow as soon as the mould is finished ....

Here's the bodyshell and donor chassis sat in John's shop ...

Being an aluminium fabricator , John wants to put his own touches on the car ...he's made a start ...

When he has shaped a few bits up and we have decent patterns, I should be able to offer a small range of aluminium bits as an option to builders .....

What all us good builders (construction) use

John's toying with a few engine options at the moment ...this is top of the list at the moment ...Jag V12 with muncie manual box ...

Hmm, nice, simple swap. Just bolts in, doesn't it?

Will be awesome once it's running though - I seem to recall Robin Hood doing a V12 powered Stainless Steel Seven about thirty years ago.

I have a Rover V8 in the Sea5 (G46) chassis at the moment, because I race an XJS I am thinking of changing the engine to a jag a 3.6 AJ6 engine

But a V12 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't quote me , but I think John intends to replace the outer rails with boxed sections and adding the Formosa framework and roll hoops to the chassis , I think it will be plenty strong enough ...

Its a bit OTT ...But will be an impressive car if he can keep the arse end on the road !!

No more complicated than anything else really ...John says the sump fits between the rails ok , clearance on the bonnet is going to be mostly ok ..maybe a larger bulge ...
Oil filter will need a remote fitting and a modified thermostat housing apparently ... I think a little nibble on the centre for gearbox clearance , and obviously , new mounts ..but no more than the inline 6 in Eric's has thrown up really ...

Mister Towed 4th February 2018 06:40

...there's just so much of it though. Gonna need a flip front under that bigger bulge.

Jaguartvr 4th February 2018 10:47

The 5.3 isn't a very tall engine. The 5.3 XJS had a flat bonnet, it only gained the bonnet bulge when the 3.6 straight 6 was fitted and that was canted over.
Make sure you change the plugs at this stage, they will probably never get changed again!

And here was me thinking a V8 would be a big engine in one of these.

Really hope the V12 can be made to work.

Good luck, Paul. :)

I have just been offered a 6 cylinder / manual box from a 60's Jag ...if it's not stupid money , I could be tempted too ...

Jaguartvr 4th February 2018 18:30

Great engines but tall and heavy. Early 60's models don't have valve stem seals so tend to drink a bit of oil. Carbs can be expensive if they don't come with the engine.

Sounds great

lancelot link 4th February 2018 19:29

complete , running and from a car being ''raced'' ...but until I get a price , its just a maybe ...

Jaguartvr 5th February 2018 12:35

If it has the smooth cam covers it is an early engine, ribbed covers came in in the 70's.
2.4 gutless, don't bother.
3.4 very sweet.
3.8, this is the one everyone wants nut generally expensive.
4.2, later engines and for our purposes the best as it is the most modern.
Engine capacity is cast on the block.

lancelot link 14th February 2018 18:06

Johns been tinkering away and is working with fitting a SBC flywheel and clutch , apparently its not too bad to convert ....

whilst hes been collecting parts and planning the car out ..he's made up some aluminium hinges , they duplicate the existing hinge but are chunkier and lighter ...

We can now officially say these are available ...£40 each ..
