Air pressure

Daft question time. Im going to hopefully put the paint on the car tomorrow. What air pressure (at the gun) do you guys use. I know there is a happy medium between orange peel and masses of overspray. Kind regards. Dave.

50 at the gun. Please bear in mind I don't know. What I am talking about!!
Good luck!
Its never the last coat, until its the last coat!

I take it that you're painting cellulose?
I tried a few different guns and got the best results on my setup with a cheap suction feed gun from screw fix! I found that the best way to set the pressure was through trial and error by painting a test piece (back of garage door!) first!

The one thing that made a massive difference for me was when I added an external pressure regulator and moisture trap.

Good luck!

Car sprayed. As i thought, black shows every tiny mark. Have some rubbing down now with 2000 grit and then a good polish with G6 and G3 paste. Any ideas how long i should leave the paint go off before attacking it with wet an dry?

landmannnn 23rd April 2013 20:20

It depends on the ambient temperature and how many coats of paint you applied. Six months would be ideal, but nobody can wait that long!
Four weeks is about right.

Dave Lowes 23rd April 2013 20:49

Is that even with cellulose?

landmannnn 23rd April 2013 20:58

Yea, celly never really dries which is why it is a really good paint for cars, it stays flexible.;

Come on Dave.... No photos, it didn't happen lol. Let's the black beauty mate

Dave Lowes 24th April 2013 18:18

Its hiding in shame until i cut it back. Looks like a big black orange at the moment.

Hammy 24th April 2013 18:25

we wont be able to tell that on here mate.... come on Id love to see it in black

Dave Lowes 24th April 2013 18:28

Will take some later. Off into the garage for my allowance of one hour once the kids kids have gone to bed:)

Dave Lowes 25th April 2013 16:10

The car is all one colour at last. Just have to wait for the paint to harden now before i can colour sand it.

Inside that metal shed in this weather you probably only need to leave it a couple of days before polishing.
If you bad mixed the last coat just right it would have come up more shiney, not to criticise, I can only get it right by luck....

I quite enjoy the last bit, flattening with 2000 and cutting compound to bring out the hidden shine.

Dave Lowes 25th April 2013 18:11

Yeah its quite rewarding. Not very easy to spray in such a small area so i always knew there would be more work to do once the paint was on. Black does show every imperfection but i really wanted it that colour.

Dave Lowes 25th April 2013 19:46

Despite the lovely orange peel affect i feel the black sets the wheels off nicely. When i can get it out of the garage i will take some more pictures stood further back :)

I like the black, both my main cars are black, well my Prelude is dark gray, but looks black, as you can see in my latest post about an related incident and a differnt car, but I thought it was worth posting, keep up the good work.

kenny-d 25th April 2013 20:28

my turn key build from Chris is black too, def excellent choice! If you are going to Stoneleigh you'll see it, it's being used by Chris as a demo car and I'm picking it up on Mon.

Hammy 26th April 2013 16:40

i too like the black but keep swinging back to sticking with BRG from the donor... only time will tell.....

Dave Lowes 26th April 2013 16:47

You cant have a ferrari tribute in BRG. Thats like dressing father Christmas in yellow :)

Hammy 26th April 2013 17:26

my absolute reason for BRG is to keep it a tribute to the 60s world famous cars and not Italy. each to their own but I will never try to create a replicar. still dont know what colour it will be but..... Jag, cobra daytona, gto and maserati are all in my build. there will be different rear lights different vents etc etc. Its a tribute to the 60s for me with a couple of twists.....
