Wozzy's MRS 200 Turbo build

I am starting another build shortly, but it is not going to be as hectic as the last build.
I am starting with the engine and it will be going up to my friends garage again, but this time it will be fitting a turbo set up and ecu and then using the car for a while to iron out any problems before fitting the kit to it.
I will get pics up before during and after the turbo install.
I haven't really decided what to do with the body kit yet, as i do not want to replicate the last one that we built.
I am considering making the clam removable rather than having to either remove the rear screen or lift the clam to gain access to the engine bay.
i have purchased a couple of sets of wheels but will make the decision on which to fit once the body kit is fitted.

Be good to see another build thread on here Wozzy.

I’ve bolted my clam down but also made the rear screen removable (as you did on your first build). To be honest, the clam is so heavy it’s not really practical to lift it on and off for easy access to the engine bay (e.g checking oil levels, getting to the battery) so the rear screen coming out on DZUS fasteners is a godsend as I’ve been progressing the build. I was planning on going back and hinging the clam but I’m not sure I will. I’ll only really be doing it for authenticity, and I’ve already fitted the petrol flap for fuelling.

Your new build sounds interesting ... presume this is another MR2 base car you’ve got rather than the 2ZZ engined car you picked up with the kit from Badrep?

I’ve thought about what I’d do if I was building again. The doors are the real give away in terms of originality and a pain in the rear to fit. I did look at options to mould an MR2 inner door to the outer skin and do away completely with the MR2 door. That would also mean doing away with the hard top and using a roll cage with a modified central tub from one of the other panel suppliers (EVO or you can still get panels from Global as I understand) to get the door jam and have any chance of making it watertight. I think in practice that’s a step too far.

What I’m still working on alongside finishing the build is trying to mock up a replica dash that fits over/blends with the major components of the MR2 dash. Interestingly, a set of RS200 replica dashboard moulds have just come up on eBay and they look in very good condition.

Maybe all us MRS200 builders should club together and buy them, or club together with Dan the new owner of the kit moulds??

Hi Dave,
Some interesting idea's there.
Yes this build is MR2 based, and it is not Badrep, i bought this one earlier this year.

You’ve probably seen already but worth taking a look at what Nathanial John did with Andy’s original prototype after he bought it and the hard top glass broke due to the force of the clam hinging. He built a frame at the rear and an original like rear window enclosure. Looks very good and pics on the MRS200 FB page

I have been having a play about with Badrep and been testing a little idea that i had.
After lots of cutting i have managed to get it to fit.

SwiftyDS 3rd November 2018 08:52

Hey Wozzy that fits much better than I thought it would.

Are you going to use Sierra dash vents as well? I know Badrep had VDO gauges in his 3D printed housing so presume you’re going to mount them in the Sierra binnacle.

Will we see a set of Sierra door cards next ?

wozzy 3rd November 2018 09:55

I'm going to see what i can get to fit and work,
this is just a play about thing as the turbo car is being completed first.

Nostromo 3rd November 2018 13:12

Awesome! Look forward to seeing what you do with this. I was planning on buying a Sierra dash and an MR2 dash then seeing if I could chop bits of the MR2 dash out and fit some of the Sierra bits in. That way I can still keep airbag in place and it might be less of a faff than trying to fit a whole Sierra dash in. I'm ages away from doing something like that though.

wozzy 3rd November 2018 13:24

I am losing the airbags, the dash looks better as a full piece, i will see what sierra parts i can get in the dash, may even try to use the Ford clocks.

Look what has arrived
whoosh bang haha

That was quick Wozzy. I can see the Apexi ECU in the pics - do you also get the return oil feed pick up? I’ve seen sandwich plates used off the sump plug but was never sure that was a good enough feed.

wozzy 10th November 2018 10:50

Yes Dave.
full kit that should just bolt on.
The good thing is that i have been getting my own kit together to run a Subaru TD04 set up, so i can use the basic software from this kit to get the other going.

I took the car up to a friends garage on Thursday evening, so we could make a start on the turbo install. He stripped the engine ready for us to start the build on the Friday.

The car started on the button, just need to get the mapping that came with the ECU installed and it should be sorted to get to a rolling road and set up properly.
Just looking for a mobile mechanic to put the software on for me on site.

properly popping and farting on the way home, and very loud.
May need another silencer adding but will see what it is like when its got the mapping on.

SwiftyDS 13th January 2019 13:29

That’s going to be something else Wozzy when you’ve got that set up.

Was the methanol injection kit part of the standard kit you imported from the US?

wozzy 13th January 2019 15:08

Yes mate
everything that has been fitted was included in the kit.
just need to get the ECU set up as i do not know how to install the software.
computers are not really my thing haha

wozzy 20th January 2019 14:04

The car drove home but used 1/4 tank of fuel for 12 miles haha.
It is booked in at the rolling road tomorrow for a session and ECU set up.
should be interesting.

SwiftyDS 21st January 2019 10:59

You’re going to have to fit a second or even third tank in for that kind of MPG!

You will have to post a video for us to all hear the bangs, pops and turbo woosh:-)

wozzy 21st January 2019 15:55

I don't seem to be able to load videos up to imgbb
Almost 240BHP :icon_eek:
202 BHP at the wheels

More to come when the intercooler is fitted and the Methanol injection is used
very happy

spinning the wheels in 2nd when you put your foot down
