just had a look at the dvla linkabove it should definately come under the radically altered vehicle section i did mine in july 2016 using that section, no probs,i think its got something to do with the fact that the "chassis" you are using already has type approval in the uk i just put all the info they ask for on the form from the existing v5 then filled in the v/627 stating "TRIBUTE MRS 200 "and only the outer body panals had been unbolted/removed and replaced with a tribute automotive mrs200 kit with no chassis mods new v5 came back in around 10 days with "TRIBUTE MRS 200" and the original reg number, no mention of "toyota" on the new v5 .On the front of the new v5 at the bottom it says "rebuilt from parts some of witch are not new" ,dvla sent a letter 1st telling me everything was in order, and the new v5 was in the post, then i purchased a private reg number from them shortly afterwards, sent all the forms back ,new number allocated within a week, must admit i was a bit amazed myself how quick they processed everything, must have caught them on a good day on both occasions !! unless its a case of who,s desk it lands on and witch side of the bed they got out of that might have something to do with how they process each application bassically i think if you follow the 8 point rule everything should be ok if you cant meet this then worst case senario would be a "Q" plate and maybe a iva test

On reading the document in the link it would seem that it's NOT a radically altered vehicle, but is a KIT CONVERTED vehicle. It all seems very confusing, as reading the radically altered it seems a new (to original spec) chassis could be used, so (for instance) an MGB could possibly retain its original reg number with a new heritage monocoque, however there is a specific category of rebuilt classic car, which indicates it would get a Q reg. Typical DVSA confusion?

The Heritage shells come under “Rebuilt Vehicles” that already have type approval and are using a chassis/bodyshell to original spec. It’s the same form for all of them anyway.

I sent my logbook off with the colour change and a copy of the receipt for the kit. I had no reply and when i wanted to tax the car i had to contact the DVLA and ask where the logbook was.I explained the details and they taxed that car over the phone for me, the logbook then got passed to the specialist build department, who sent me a questionaire with tick boxes regarding alterations and mods to the vehicle.
I scanned the documents and sent them back with a link to the build thread, and received my logbook shortly after with the colour change, but the car is still classed as a MR2. I then sent the logbook back again to have the reg number changed.

if it still says mr2 on the v5 it could cause problems with mr plod if you get pulled or get flashed by a anpr camera, also might cause insurance issues too ,v5 should state what it is now after the body swap, not what it was originally thats what i was told by the dvla before i sent the forms to them my v5 reads as follows--- make-tribute mrs200 type-blank variant-zzw30(k) version-zzw30r akfqhw(1f) model-blank body type-sports. no mention of "mr2" anywhere on new v5

Mine were registered before this new "kit conversion" category existed, but from what i can gather:

you only fill in about 30% of it cos its a generic form.

just put a cover letter with your documents and photos setting out what you have done in 3 steps:

1) bought an MR2
2)took the non-structural body panels off, leaving the original frame and mechanical components
3) added a fibreglass replacement body which changed its appearance but nothing mechanical. In fact it scores a maximum 14/14 points.

keep photos down to a minimum - 4 or 5 should do it - as long as they can see the original car, the naked frame, the finished car (unpainted and undetailed is OK - just the body fit will suffice), and some half-on-half-off panel swap images to show you really did it!

include receipts of purchase for car and kit (you dont need any sundry receipts)

V5: leave MAKE as Toyota, and change MODEL to "MRS200" or whatever you like. Change body style from convertible to coupe. Change colour.

The online guide kinda suggests you need another form filling in called a V55/4 or V55/5.... The first time i DID fill that in and it just confused them and they registered the MR2 swap AND register a new car..then I had "fun" with what is technically a cloned car. Took 6 weeks to sort that one out and it went right to the CX of the DVLA to intervene!). The CX said if you ever do it gain, DON'T use this form. So on my second one I didnt and all was fine within a few weeks.

i think you need your drivers license and proof of address or something too, and MOT Certificate, and pay the road tax with a cheque. (What's a cheque?!)

yup, yer spot on andy, i did what you advised when i did mine ,insured as "tribute mrs 200,and registered as "tribute mrs200" then everything ties up right on the insurance data base,also likley to get very messy in the event of a insurance claim,if its not registered as what its insured as,

I agree with all the others, if your chassis hasn't been altered you're all ok. I would leave an engine swap if going down that route until after you have it registered.

I had the complication that my MR2 was V6 engine converted but unregistered a couple of years before i bought it. not a problem... just rectify it in the kit conversion process. Did that on both cars actually - not a problem either time. just lost 2 or 3 points in their system, but as everything else scored it was OK.

Just include receipts n photos of the important bits and fill in the simple form. As long as it's clear to the DVLA clerk what has been done and that it's legal, that's all they want to know. Not trying to trick you. :tea:

Ha! Theres a million other things that need sorting before I go near that. I may not fit it to be honest. As I say, too many other things to worry about... Will be fitting the side windows this evening and seeing about making a mount for the wing mirrors.

Couple of little updates. Have been making the mounts for the wing mirrors. I assume the correct way to go about it is to fibreglass then fill over the top to fill the gaps, then sand until smooth. This is how I'm going about it anyway:

Next bit was to blend the headlight bowls into the bonnet which has come out really well.

Work has been slow as am decorating again and have a little Nostromo on the way so the wife is being a bit needy. Really though, I only need to sort the headlights, fit the mirrors and the rear end and it'll be road worthy. We'll get there...

Cheers Lee, the thought of selling the kit has crossed my mind a couple of times but I think I'd kick myself if I didn't finish it now with how much work I've put in. I'm not intent on selling. I do however need to get shot of my 3 door Civic and get a nice little 5 door estate so got my eye on an Impreza wagon... again.

Big update for me this time around. Not big as in loads but big as in is a big bit of the car that I was worrying about - the clam, and making it hinged. Its actually worked much better than expected. I'll let the pics do the talking.

Couple of things left to finish this bit. Firstly, the box section is held onto the hardtop with a bolt and a couple of massive washers. Ideally, i'll get a length of stainless on the inside of the hardtop then put a couple more bolts through it to reinforce it and spread the load a little.
I'll need a bonnet stay type thing to hold it up as I don't want to have to drive everywhere with a couple of lengths of wood on the roof just in case I need petrol.
I've also found that the clam will actually go higher than this if I adjust the rose joints slightly but its flipping heavy, and that was without the window!
Lastly, I've been looking at twin electric rams to do the lifting but its not something I actually 'need' so will have to wait.

I have a question. I want to paint the underside of all the fiberglass parts black. Is there any particular type of paint I should use? Or can I just slop a bit of hammerite on there?
