1970's Kit Car

Hi Folks

This is probably a mega long shot. But I was wondering if anyone could help me track down the name / maker of a 1970's kit car.

My father purchased the car in Northern Ireland circa 1981. Its registration number was 146POD and was based on a VW Beetle floor plan. The car was yellow gel coat, and (crudely) styled / influenced by the 1970's Le Mans Race cars.

It was vaguely similar in style to the car in the link (but much squarer
edged and simpler design), but from memory utilised a standard windscreen (possibly from the beetle). The door hinges were hung with external hinges (similar to or perhaps from a Mini). The front headlamps (round similar too, perhaps from Mini) were set very low to the ground inside square recesses covered with perspex panels held in plate with yellow painted aluminium (screwed on) frames.

I've tried to track down information for a long time but have never been able to find a photo of another car. Anyone have any knowledge?

It was similar in style to http://www.usedcarsfsbo.com/asp/Item...=5%2F23%2F2011

Perhaps a laser 917 on a beetle pan.

Could it have been a UVA Montage, a McLaren M6 GTR evocation?

...or maybe not, I just realised you said it had a beetle windscreen.

More likely to be a 917 than the M6 ...I had an M6 GTR and they are really nice cars ..a pain in the ass to drive , but good quality and not as described.

Have you tried searching for it in the Allcarindex for Type "kitcar" at www.allcarindex.com/search.html

Sounds like a Clan Crusader to me.

Hi Folks thank for the replies on this. Sorry it took me so long to respond, I had the setting to email if there were responses but that never happened.

The car was definitely none of the above. It was beetle based ( I used to own a Clan Crusader so I know what they are). The design of it could only be described as crude compared the the vehicles suggested.

I came across a car which I would describe as the closest I have seen. but still not it. The car had a flat slot style rear screen and buttress' a flat rear deck, and very flat rear end with a upward hinged panel on the back to allow access to the engine. The front styling of the car in the photo is very similar with the headlamp recesses, but overall the car my father had would have been a bit more slab sided than the one in the photo.

Whilst it wasn't the most attractively designed car it was very heavily and solidly built. It had a small padded rear bench seat (with no backrest). The doors if I recall (similar to the car in the link) partly recessed in to the roof.
