Welcome to the forum Richard it's good to have another type r builder as there is only a few of us! Interesting site though I read it from top to bottom.
I dont think anyone but Marlin have used the cable clutch as it's just to firm! I'm just starting mine now after finally deciding how I was going to tackle it! Good job on your engine parts I need to do something with mine Craig |
Glad you liked the site Craig. Good luck with your build, and hope the clutch mounting goes well. I find those kind of "freestyle" bits are the most rewarding :)
Cheers, Richard |
Hi guys.
Just found a nice guy to provide my hosting. Not been updated for a while but will try over Christmas. http://www.delta-sin.co.uk/johns-5exi/ |
OK, as its just over a week to go now before the build starts here is a link to my project website.

Nice site David.
Any reason why you went the K series route and not the honda 1.6 VTEC? I thought this was the Marlin's engine choice now. |

Yes Marlin are now pushing the 1.6 VTEC, but there was two main reasons I went the k route. (i) Myself and some friends have some experience of the K-series, and as alot of this project is going to be a learning curve I thought I might try and simplify a bit. (ii) The cost of the Honda route which ever way I cut it was at least £1k more. Therefore I decided to start out with a 1.6k and them possibly upgrade at some later date if I decide I need to, when my finances will have recovered and I have more experience under my belt. |
Or could go the turbo route in the future.;)

Hello,
Just signed up to madabout-kitcars. Greetings to you all. Am building an exi, www.mrspike.co.uk/exi.htm but bear with me it appears to be broken at the moment :/ Have bought a Rover T series engine for my kit but am still undecided weather to fit it yet, am looking forwards to talking to other builders who have successfully fitted this engine! Cheers Mike |
Hi mate.
Welcome. A few of things with the turbo. Diesel driveshafts, different Marlin engine mounts and change to MGF gear linkage come to mind. Looking at your site, if you have fitted your hubs and wheels, you may have aready spent money on outer CV's for the Hub connection. Like all the turbo builders, the driveshafts have been an expensive excercise. But it's the diesel ones that work. |
ah nice one. No I haven't bought any CV joints yet, I have just fitted hubs so I can wheel the chassis in and out of my small garage. The T series engine was out of a Rover 600 rather than a 200 coup which I understand may have been a bit of an error?
Anyways I've fixed my website now Cheers :D |
No not an error. Just more parts you could not use from the donor and have to buy from the scrappies.
I've still got the second hand driveshafts on test after nearly 1000 miles, but seem to be ok. Drop me a PM if you need anything. |

Depends whether you are planning more power? If my memory serves me correctly from my ownership days the 200 coupe has a much stronger engine including upgraded pistons! Welcome, you may want to post on the main board? |

see how it goes then. I have no idea what to expect from the power to weight ratio, I don't know weather I'll want more power yet. I have however bought the rest of my kit now so hopefully I will soon find out!!!

The two types of pistions was used throughout the Rover range. Not just the coupe. So it was in the 800, 600, 400 and 220 GTI.
The change in pistons was year related. Havn't a clue when the changes happened. But with either pistons, your taking a chances upping the power any more than 250 BHP I would say. |
Just to complete the list here is mine

Just thought I would add my new page to the collect so those of you interested can see how things are progressing. Not much has really happened apart from alot of talking and calculations to see if things would work. Hoping to have the car complete around easter ready for testing and showing at Japfest. http://www.facebook.com/5EXi.R Cheers Jon Coombes |

Just had a quick look and noticed that there were loads of hits on the top thread ..... post your web site address here. Thing is most don't work. I wonder if you could all be so kind as to bring this up to date as it seems such a shame as your web sites are great and so informative. Thanks Terry Ps Hope you all have a great time at Stoneleigh. Sorry we won't be there to see you. |
