SVA and E numbers on Lights
Here is a general question about E numbers on lights and the SVA test.
I've read the SVA manual but can't figure out if it is compulsary to have E approval marks on your lights to pass the SVA test. Do we any SVA testers that view this forum that could comment, maybe? I have some front indicators (ex-motor bike) which are not 'e' marked. Will they fail? |

Thats a good question, I've bought some fog / reverse lights that dont have E marks. I've put some different one on for now!
|
Want to bring this one back up, I've got clear side repeaters which are nice and smooth so no edge radius problems but no E mark, not sure if I should put those on or the E marked ones with a sharper edge.
Also any ideas if these indicators will pass? I've got some others that I can put on with E marks: http://www.msportster.co.uk/data/p_construction470.jpg and the repeaters: http://www.msportster.co.uk/data/p_parts044.jpg |
I'll check my side repeaters tonight Patrick. They look the same as mine. Will check for an 'E' mark. I got mine from Marlin.
|
Thanks, I got mine for SVC at Stoneleigh this year! :)

Hi Patrick.
Mine do not have the 'E' mark on the side repeaters. |
Excellent, I will put those ones on :) Thanks very much for checking.

I think the headlights have to be emarked but the rest are up to the SVA inspector to judge if they are adequate......
I know this is the case for the rear as I purchased rear lights as they were apparently E marked and when they arrived they were not... So I phoned up the nearest SVA centre for clarification. The only problem is that if the lights are not an E marked cluster then they have to conform to certain distant regs such as brake light must be 200mm+ from the rear fog light. |
my headlights, spot lights & rear lights are all E marked. I've put e marked fog and reverse on for the test.
I'll put the none e marked indicators and repeaters on for the test and see what happens, but looks like it will be fine! Thanks guys :) |
I've read the manual a number of times and it says "e" marked or emit light of a similar brightness.
If they are "E" marked, i guess there is no debate. If they are not marked, it is down to the examiners discretion. My plan is to use some cheap "e" marked side repeaters and then replace with my nice non-"e" marked ones. My theory is that the less there is to his descretion, the easier it is for the examiner to give it a pass! I bought another set of front indicators recently to get the "e" marks and now find they are only 5 watt bulbs! Normal car indicators are 21 watt, so now i'm not sure which is best? Bright but not "e" marked? |

saw some brilliant looking mirrors with repeaters built in at stoneleigh and I want to fit them but they didnt appear to be SVA compliant so not sure what to do
Combined price of nice mirrors and side repeaters is about the same as the mirrors witht them built in so dont want to be buying mirrors and repeaters twice so have similar problem |
Halfords do cheap mirrors for about £12 IIRC - they use a universal hole pattern so you can put the ones on you want, remove then put the halfords ones on. That's the plan with the Sportster as I have nice bullet mirrors that won't pass SVA. You'd then have to source some repeaters which you could sell on after the test. Same with the mirrors, there have to be many builders out there that will need a set of mirrors or repeaters just for SVA.

Problem with that is Id be left with a hole in the bonnet where the repeaters had been and it would look a bit daft with 2 sets of repeaters |
ahh I didn't think about the holes.
What causes the mirrors with repeaters to fail? Glass size, sharp edges, movement of the mirror? Nothing can be done about glass size, but edges could be covered with some small rubber edging! :) |
Sorry John and fell's.I seem to have missed this thread,Can anyone post a pickie of the mirrors.
