Steering Lock / Ingnition Switch

Does Anyone no if a sterring Lock / Ingnition Switch is needed for the SVA

limpabit 13th October 2005 09:03

I hope not. I'm going for a remote start and flip switch.

SVA requires some form of anti thief device either mechanical or electrical. So I'm going with a toad AI606 alarm/immobiliser as recommended by the Rover guys.

Mark of Marlin tells me that so long as the steering lock (OEM) works OK when you remove the key then this is OK for SVA.

If anyone thinks differently then I'd like to know now as I'm off to SVA in a couple of weeks!

Clearly an anti-theft immobiliser etc is recommended.

Cheers,

John

Just re read the SVA manual.

Application:

All vehicles except
a goods vehicles
b Passenger vehicles that comply with the requirements of item E1 of ESVA requirements and having a date of manufacture on/after 1 October 1998.

Procedure and standards:
1. Check, in addition to normal "ignition" switch, the vehicle is permanently fitted with an anti-theif device that can be activaated to prevent the vehicle to be driven or moved under iit's own power.

The manual speaks like this all the way through. Like solicitors!

So looks like I need to keep the ignition switch.

Surely that doesn't mean you need the original ignition switch. I read that as "if you choose a big red button as your normal ignition switch then you simply need some additional immobiliser.

Perhaps John or Trev could ask this question when they go for SVA shortly to confirm either way??

You could be right Strolls. A flip switch and push button start could be classed as a "normal" ignition switch.

immobiliser

I had standard ignition lock with no extra immobiliser for my sva test and it passed, I intend to fit push button start later.
The SVA manual is written in such a way that things can be interpreted in a number of ways which is pretty much the ministry of transport standard ala mot manual. If you want to know for certain before going for test I would ring and ask at the sva station you intend taking it to.
I fitted a cat when I didn't need to and the tester said you should have rang me and I would have told you, I do think they take calls and give advice as he did so during my test.

regards Brian.

How come you don't need a cat? I thought that most all 5exis would require one for SVA.

So if using a diffirenent method to start engine with an additional immobilizer is good enough for sva, do we still require a mechanical steering lock for the sva or can it be totally removed ? ?

cat

The cat only has to be fitted if from post august 95 donor. The evidence of age will be required such as registration document.

Thanks! Any idea when they started fitting k-series engines to the 200?

A 1994 engine is more likely to be high-milage, but presumably once SVA has been completed and an age-related plate fitted a newer engine can be fitted without requiring a cat?

We decided to use a hiden switch that cuts off the fuel pump, that in turn will imobilise the car. (we hope that this will be suffient)

We have also fited a non thatcham approved alarm as a extra.

Tuesday will be judgement day so will let you all know what happens!! :eusa_pray:

Happy building
