iva harness fixings

some advice please...

I'm building a Shelsley and am considering 4 point harnesses. The mounting points are fine. There is a choice between clip-in & bolt-in fixings, both are which are "road-legal" according to Demon Tweeks....but thought I'd ask here before committing. My preference is the clip in type, for ease of build/carpet fitting etc as I can simply fix an eye at this stage, and fit the belts later.

Has anybody had any problems with these fittings with over-fastidious IVA inspectors?

Provided you have suitable plates to spread the load on you should be fine.

They should be welded to the chassis.

Lower fixings already have a spreader plate welded in as part of the chassis design.

Top fixings have tubes welded to the rear of a strong box cross member....which i don't like as accessing these means a hole through to the engine bay and will ruin all my carefully laid sound-proofing plans. Instead I had intended drilling 12mm holes through the cross member for the eyes, then having a spreader plate behind as well.

These need to be welded though do they...that'll be a slight headache, but not insurmountable. Can I simply get away with rivetting or bolting the spreader plate in plate to avoid it turning, whilst still allowing it to perform its function of spreading the load?

I suggest you google for "vosa iva manual M1" and look at section 13. It doesn't say the that welding is mandatory, but there is a strong hint the plates should be welded.
However in the case of a kit car it may well come down to the descresion of the examiner.

I welded mine to save any hassle at the test.
