Possible stupid number plate question
I have just got a plastic black and silver 'show plate' for the back of the car.
How do I fit it? I don't really want to stick screws through it but not sure if double side numberplate tape will be enough to keep it on the back of the car. Any advice/experiences? |
I agree it would be a shame to drill holes in them. I've used number plate tape from Halfords and always found it successful. I've also bought a roll of strong double sided tape from Lidls which worked well.
Providing everything is clean and the surface reasonably flat it should be all good. It was removing plates later that I found there was a problem! If the body isn't perfectly flat I've built layers of tape against the contour and that worked too. |
I've used double sided tape for years on some cars, the secret is in the preparation, clean the the stick on area real well with thinners ( check a small area first so you don't get a paint reaction)
Then the DS tape will be almost permanent. |
Use meths, It won't affect the paint and cleans just as well.

Proper number plate 'stickies' are super strong, as long as the surface is fairly flat, with not too much of a curve.
As mentioned, clean the area, (personally, i would never use thinners on a finished paint job, but each to his own...) My best tip would be, warm up the area, and the stickies, with a hairdryer or hot air gun, this seems to 'activate' the glue for a much better bond. So good in fact, that it may take the paint off if you need to remove it..... |
I am now thinking of putting some kind of mounting bracket onto the car so I can slot in the 'show plate' or the real numberplate depending on what I need.
