The replacement cam sensor was labelled on the box as a Crankshaft Sensor. It came with a new o-ring. It is branded HAAS and cost £26 from EuroCarParts. Problem solved. Thanks for everyone's input.

Also, count the keyways on the sides of the plug. Mine has 3 but the first one ECP got for me had 4. The description on the box says Crankshaft Sensor. Nothing surprises me with this MY2000 Z3- it...

Symptoms: engine starts but will not run.

Suggestion: unplug the MAF sensor and see if it will start and run without it. If it does, replace the MAF. If it doesn't, proceed with the following cam...
