Is there a way to shorten the rear a few inches, raise the wheel arch opening, and raise the "bump" so it's highest point is above the center of the wheel arch? it would be more visually pleasing...

The external hinges are key to complete the look of the car IMO. Like the door handles, pininfarina badges, and and chrome strips down the side they make up the jewelry of it all.
