Neil, in answer to your hardtop question, the rear of the SWB kit is higher in front of the boot opening and on the rear wings around the roof than the stock Z3. But the stock BMW hard top could be modified to fit.
I think the karches would accept 20" alloys if you wanted to go to extremes.
