Ooh, bad luck.
I had an MG Maestro back in the 80's. It was the 1600 with twin webers and my goodness it was terrible. Having said that I know how easy it is to get attached to a car when it's old and frail and you've had it a while though. They can really get under your skin.
You could ask the insurance company if you can buy back the salvage once they've paid out. I know that's what most of the classic policies allow.
