Interesting, it was the left one that popped out on mine. Have you got the slave shaft mounted correctly? should be a fairly big bearing housing that mounts to the block.

The steering shouldnt really be stiff, maybe at low speeds, but thats normal for a non power assisted car.

As for the engine positioning, can't say mine looks like its forward on any side.
You should try to get to the kit car show at Stoneleigh, will be more phantoms there so you can compare.

Get some temporary sound proofing (thick felt stuff) and carpet in for the drive out there, it makes a world of difference to the cabin noise, also make sure your heater intake is from the inner wing area, and you have the panel which closes the bonnet vents off from the load bay, otherwise you'll find the cabin starts to get pretty damn hot.
