Yes and no. The digits are the most critical factor and you're right that some cars have odd sized/shaped plates as standard, but the catch-all is that the plates have to have the manufacturer's details displayed on them at the bottom. Can't remember the specific dates but I think it's everything from 51 plate onwards.

As discussed earlier, you're unlikely to get prosecuted if you have period plates on a period looking car, but there's always the chance that you will.
