I've got some more photos of his toys somewhere. He has the original Beetle and Beach buggy Revel kit models.
He is the only person who gets me a bit star struck when I talk to him (I'm not worthy!)

Anything Roth, or Roth inspired is good by me!

Question V627/1 Evidence

I only had to send these two pictures of the re-bodied car - one from each end showing the number plate.

It went through without a problem, perhaps I was lucky as the base Spitfire has been registered in my name since 1975?

So Mick, you didn't have or need the MOT to get the name changed & V5 back?

Colin HD - A belated welcome to the forum Colin.

This is a tricky area, so it is definitely worth doing things the right way if you can.

So, as long as its a 'normal' rebody (whatever that is) with no chassis modifications, minimum of 8 Points - Send of the V5 for a Name Change, No Inspection and no need for MOT & Ins until you are ready to put it on the road.
The official line from the DVLA is that each application is judged on its individual merits.

Technically, there is no such thing as a "rebody" in the list of DVLA options here:

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/overview

So my "kit car" / "rebody" effectively got judged under the "Radically altered vehicles" section under the 8 point rule.

My, admittedly limited, understanding is that the Beetle chassis has its own sub-set of rules.

So you only get to keep the 5 points for the chassis if you include the complete floor pan too.

Then to qualify as a "rebody", the fibreglass bodywork and its associated subframe must bolt to the chassis/floor pan.

So if you weld the subframe to the chassis and then bolt the body work to that you have to go down the IVA road.

Just to pick up on the MOT & insurance issue…

I was also told by the DVLA that I needed to be fully road legal before they would change my V5C.

After a bit of "polite" debate, it became clear they were applying the "first registration" rules in error.

So in the end I was able to get the V5C changed before I got on the road.

I was even able to send the new V5C back and get the "Make" changed due to a typo in it.

Note: There is a maximum number of 20 characters available in the "Make" line and the "Model" line will be blanked out.

So in may case, my V5C went from:

Make: Triumph
Model: Spitfire 1500

To:

Make Triumph Swordfish
Model:

You do not have to keep the original make on the V5C, as IanA switched his from "BMW" to "Z300S BARCHETTA".

Well if your inspiration is a 1964 Ed Roth car, then stick your build thread in the "Vintage and Classic Roadster Kit Car Builds" section.

There is a mix of interesting building in that section of the forum and if you post a link to the new thread here, people will find it.

And finally, I assume you have seen the BMW Z3 based "Cosmotron".

I think I had to send the MOT, insurance certificate and receipt from Tribute, as well as the pictures and V5, but it was almost two years ago so I can't be certain.

I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable members will clarify whether or not this is necessary.

Here's my scan of the letter and cover from the nice man at DVLA

Regards, Mick

Not sure how Paul registered the Cosmotron, as I don't see that it qualifies as a RAV!
Make change without the MOT would be handy, as I want to build the body first, then refurbish the pan, no alterations!
This way there is less chance of me taking ages to complete the chassis, with a completed body over in the corner of the garage!!
I already have the Perspex domes, so I 'only' need to separate the body from pan and I'm off and running!

The 61 bubbletop looks very pretty ..I do like a nicely turned out 61 ...They aren't the most popular of years , but still very stylish ....

I threw this 61 El Camino styled truck together with a lot of help from a mate about 2-3 years ago .....
