No doubting your engineering quality and execution what a beautiful frame, but as the man said in the film Jaws "If think we are going to need a bigger boat" but in your case "I think you are going to need a bigger engine"!

How about a V8

How about a V8

The current engine is "new" and is +60 thou (it all helps). It has the Mk3 Spitfire cam plus the Dellorto and a 4-2-1 straight through exhaust......but like you I am mildly concerned (especially with a 3.89 diff and slightly larger wheels).

One of the ways that I have made things harder for myself is to ensure that the body will be easily removable once the car is finished so that working on it can be enjoyable (one of the many reasons that I like older cars).

This might just persuade me to swap-in a little Mazda unit and box......but I need to finish it first.

was said in jest, the car is beautiful and as you say if all that quality safety and longevity requires more power at a latter date you have the basis there to accommodate of whole rang of options

I race an XJS with a friend and our moto is for every 1kg shed in weight is 1HP added

I'v got a BMW i.6i with gearbox, engine loom, ECU, prop ect.

Ooooo, how tempting is that? Is it the same as one you've used in a Herald chassis?

The last one was a 1.8i (140bhp) this is a 1.6i (125bhp) but there are externally the same units. I also have the original radiator.
Why not drop in for a cuppa and have a look-see

I now have an exhaust that exits out the back.......

.........and the semi-spaceframe is pretty green. Spraying box- and tube-section is effing tedious.

Next job, ali panel the frame. I'm looking forward to that.

Paul, Charman.tech, Scottie22, Mickey1Mo, Marc F, and Triumph Special – thanks for the recent positive reactions. It does help to maintain morale. With Paul about to be the proud owner of an MOT certificate, I feel rather like that last Giant Tortoise…….

This weekend I attacked the aluminium panelling. I started with some paper templates.

I cut out the panels with a jigsaw, then started to hand-finish with a file.
For those where the cut-line was a little wavey, I clamped some steel strap and ran a power tool along the edge.

Some ”before” and “after” shots…..

And a detail shot.

I have another six of the vertical panels cut but not fitted. I need to buy another sheet of ali to complete the front and rear bulkheads. All rather rewarding.

Oxford - Don't worry, there are still a number of "long term" Sammio builds either on hold, or slowly ticking away, in the background.

The panel work looks great so far & your car is going to be spectacular when it is done.

As Oxford is closer to me than Norfolk, I will try to arrange a visit to "The Woods" as part of my shake down / confidence building runs.

It's been time consuming but very rewarding. Start shopping for a chop-saw and several blades, plus some ear-defenders.

I am trying to achieve a panel a day. Images would be a little repetitive so this will be the final one until I have fixed them all. Another 500 rivets should arrive tomorrow.

All progress is good progress......

The spaceframe is currently stored vertically. This is the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. I am using plastic ends in places to tidy-up open box section. This allows access for Waxoyling. They aren't very period, but they will not be seen when everything that I have planned is in place.

At least photos of panels being added would not be as repetitive as all the photos of clouds I've posted.

If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise......such as a Swordfish.

Paul's efforts have really been rewarded. The car looks even better in the flesh than in the one or two pics that he has posted over the last few years....... It also sounds great.

It handles and feels like an old car (rather than a kit) and it is so solid - all edges and panels are able to bear weight as you get in and out.

Paul and I had a very enjoyable real-time forum chat. At times it was like a counselling session....."Hello, my name is Paul and I built a Sammio."

I did get some therapy of my own, fitting a few more panels.

One day I might just get on the road.

Oxford - Great to finally meet you in person today.

Although I'm not sure what has happened to my facial expression in that first photo.

Fair play for building your car in the middle of no-where, as at least I could come indoors to warm up on very cold days.

Your car will be spectacular when it is done.
