Thanks chaps - a focus group has its uses - especially when it confirms what I was thinking. I shall just have to get used to undoing the leather straps to flip the back to fill the micro tank every hour and a half.

Depends on where and how you fit it. i think you _could_ get it to work, but personally i've always gone for a 2nd hand filler on purpose to give it a bit more... age? if that makes sense.

Dave, I think you are right in that it could work, but I know that I will never regret fitting a used alloy Monza/Aston.
Not worth the risk. I shall keep it for another build, or else stick it up for auction.

Making progress, albeit slowly, and I shall post some pics before too long.
I had a new Lucas alternator fitted, but it was too big to fit neatly under the lowered bonnet. So, when the dynamo on the Moggy packed-up, I did a quick conversion.
This left me without an aternator.....I needed something small......and for £40 you can't do much better than a brand new 40A Denso that really is very small. It fits nicely on the standard mount with little need for spacing.
It's from a Kubota. I won't be running a heater, so 40A will be plenty.

Despite being quiet of late I have been braving the cold down at The Glade. I have mounted the radiator (I want to start her up in the spring to boost morale). I have been down there today pretending to be a blacksmith - making the bonnet/hoop hinge bracket. The mounting will be adjustable in three planes and I want to be sure it doesn't foul on anything.
All I need to do now is fight the symptoms of hypothermia.

Get yourself some old-fashioned welding goggles to wear instead of a full-face mask. Then do shed loads of welding and you'll give yourself a panda style ski-tan. You won't feel any warmer but at least you'll look it.

I did hold the metal (with gloves) after welding to get some feeling in the fingers.
Mr T, I have had welder's tan on my arms before.

I'll see your arc tanned arms and raise you an arc tanned eyeball.
Note to self: when you're laying on your back welding under the car make sure you haven't blocked the light sensor on the welding mask with part of the chassis before you strike the arc.

Another tip, don't weld wearing a T shirt with holes, I once got badly burnt in patches wearing a vey old T shirt after a day welding up a digger bucket! LOL

An update
Well, despite being quiet I have been making progress. Some has been under the bonnet, but most has been with the hinging mechanisms for the bonnet and rear deck, and lots of work on the body. I needed the hinges to be in place before fitting the radiator and routing the exhaust....and other tasks.
So, just a few from this afternoon when the rear hinged up and down (just as I had hoped) for the first time.
You will notice that I have been cutting and shutting (down the right hand rear arch etc) to try and get the rear more symmetrical. I also had to extend the number plate recess as I cut the first f***** in the wrong place. Don't ask "how" because I don't know. I suspect a faulty tape measure.
All the different paint /filler colours do appear to distort it a little, and I have still to address the shape of the bottom edge of the rear deck......but the evenings are light.
For those not familiar with this build, the hoops are removable, and when in place will be covered by humps.
More pics in the coming days.

Yes, I shall be building up the right side to make it symmetrical. Also, the rear deck is not adjusted accurately so looks worse than it is.
N-Dog is thriving. Here he displays his latest mud beauty treatment.

You have certainly been busy, as there has clearly been a lot of fibreglass fabrication work going on.
I know what you mean about the "work in progress" being hard to see clearly.
But by the time you have got a coat of primer over the top I am sure it will look amazing.
How are you planning to fit the humps over the roll bars (e.g. will they be hinging forward)?

Yes, Paul, the humps will hinge forward so that the rear deck can lift. They will also be easily removable. The plan is to have a bit of a "transformer" with a few appearance options - one or two roll hoops, and one or two humps.
The bonnet and rear deck are each quickly removable - they are both held on with two meaty ex-MOD pins. The idea is for the finished (ha ha) car to be as easy to work on as possible.
