Default overdrive gearbox swap

Hmm....Houston I think we have a problem?

Thought when I bought an overdrive D type box it would be a straight swap...it appear not so? Whilst I thought it was simply a change of bulkhead I seem to have cocked up.

seems the input shafts differ....as the casings are the same and the D type overdrive fits the gearbox...I assumme I can swap the top rail and fit the overdrive to the original casing and input shaft.....????

As far as I can recall, the gearbox input shaft should not be different - depending of course on the car the box orginally came from - from year to year, model to model some changes to the clutch were made.

So as long as the input shaft matches the clutch, there shouldn't be a problem...

However, the gearbox output shaft DOES differ between overdrive and non overdrive models - meaning it is not possible to just bolt an overdrive to a standard non overdrive gearbox...

Latest update on Ebay cock-up Nr 1.

Dave at Canley is a really useful guy.....apparently the Mk 111 - 1v D type overdrive and box can be stripped down and rebuilt in my 1600 Vit casing......only problem is have I got the nuts to give it a go? or I could screw up 2 gearboxes

Canleys can do it for me for £150 assuming there are no worn bits that need replacing....on top of that I would still need to shorten and balance the prop, get the additional wiring and overdrive switch or gear stick conversion switch mounting bracket and odds and sods. So further outlay of £300- £400

Or do I cut my losses and sell the bloody thing back on ebay? Decisions Decisions.

With the amount of torque and the lightness of the car am I going to see any real benefit..... However, I would feel a great sense of achievement if I managed to work it all out myself.
