Convertible MX250

We may try to put together an MX250C for the Donnington Show, if we get enough time and the right base vehicle turns up at the right price.

As soon as the panels are out of the mould (Wednesday?) I will post some more pictures, and retouch them to remove the vents.

Hi Chris, as it happens, I've been looking into how I can make it to Donnington - I'm karting at a stag do on the Saturday but could fly down to East Midlands airport early on Sunday for a good look round.

Are you looking to base the next MX250c on a Mk1 again?

Also, I was checking out your various tweaks to the front end earlier - are you still planning to offer a choice of front ends to customers based on your previous molds?

Yes, the demo MX250 will be a Mk1, hopefully with tan leather interior.
You will be able to choose which ever front end you wish to go with the rear, I just need to find time to make a grill insert for the Large opening version.

First set of MX250C panels out of the mould today. We still need to make a small mould for the return into the lower boot opening and the boot lid itself, but should be done next week, so those who are in the queue shouldn't have to wait too long.

What size spacers would you typically require for the wheels?

Looking at convertible agree with Tytek about vents, without the hardtop the shape has have altered, maybe a little long on the rear end ! Will be when you have to sand it anyway.

Length looks fine to me, but I think a smooth rear wing works better. It's good that you've got a variety of styles Chris, the customer gets exactly what they want & individual models can be more unique.

Bongo You should be salesman, think you got that spot on ! I loved the original 250 shape but I am not really a replica fan. It is a brilliant base for an old school classic with the style you want to give it . Will be great to to see all the variations.

Spacer size will depend on wheel width. Our red demo car has:
Front 7.5j 20et offset with NO spacer
Rear 9j 15et offset with a 25mm spacer.

Peepsy's Mk2 has:
Front 8j 0et offset with NO spacer but flared arches
Rear 8j 0et offset with a 25mm spacer.

I think the 7J 10et wheels for the MX250C will require a 50mm spacer on the rear.

Hey Peepsy, I'm not a big fan of replicas either. Having said that, I'm not widely knowledgable on classic cars at all, I just like what I like. And when I first saw the MX250 I really liked the shape & style but had no idea what it had been inspired by. It was a lot later that I did a bit of searching on Google & found the original prancing horse version. Gotta say I've never been a fan of Ferraris so I'm glad Chris is making alterations available here & there so they can be easily customised & seen to be very nice cars in their own right & not just a knock off built by someone trying to fool his mates into thinking he'd bought a classic.

25 million pound classic at that. Having bought the mk2 prototype mx250 from Chris because again it is different bigger wheels wider arches etc, I would say given the choice the mk1 is much easier to age . chrome handles , mirrors, tan leather. the mk2 is a much more modern version maybe mechanically advanced but harder to age and more expensive than a mk1 less off the shelf bits. If you are going to spend thousands on kit and accessories you need the best base you can find, take your time and pick a good one.

I was thinking of a Mk2 for a newer, possibly more reliable motor etc but the more I think about it I'm swaying toward a Mk1, especially as this would be my first build & could do with as few alterations to the body as possible.

Other than that though, I'm not a stickler for running themes / styles in a car and am quite a technophile so could easily imagine a classic look on the outside but a modern & gadget-filled interior. I know it won't be to many people's tastes but they're not the ones putting in the cash, time or effort to build it!

Classic outside, star ship enterprise inside sounds fine. The base car is the main thing.What Nick said to Tytek was great advice.Find the best rust free and mechanical sound car you can. Service history when the cam belts were last done etc. All the body will be covered bar the doors and they are going to be painted anyway. The price you pay may not reflect the real price as lots of parts come off and go on ebay including the wheels ,panels, lights etc. Extras they have done, lowered, adjustable shocks , hoops and bars you dont have to buy so come off the bill. Be choosy there's a lot of them out there but check there history before you part with your cash .

Picked up the base car for the convertible today, part-ex bargain from a local garage that really didn't want it anywhere near their forecourt



New hood in February!!!



Usual wear on drivers seat, but have another on the way. Really nice polished alloy spoke wheel too.



I hope we can get it to Donnington in an unfinished state........

Should be a quick conversion to do, without the roof. Probably going to do black gel coat panels so we are halfway there with a colour match to the doors
