You won't get any flack from classic enthusiasts Swifty, jealousy maybe, but no flack.

Just loiter near your car and earwig the discussions about it and you'll see what I mean. With mine, the main topic of conversation from classic buffs has been whether or not it's been restored. Some say it has to have been because there's no rust, and this is met with the argument that it's clearly aluminium so won't rust, while the imperfect paint can only have been applied decades ago. I haven't heard anybody question whether it's real or not in three years of classic shows.

Enjoy your car, it's a credit to you. One very small observation though: I know you probably machined your gearknob yourself, but an aluminium ball would just 'fit' the look of your car so much better I think...

Oh, and if you were to take commissions to make aluminium gear gates like yours, what sort of price would we be talking about. PM me if talking money on the forum seems a bit vulgar.

Define a "classic" car?

Parts of your car are over 40 years old and have undergo a full nut & bolt restoration, which sounds like a classic car to me.

Obviously, it is not a classic Lancia, but your secret is safe with us.

It is a long shot, but try ringing / emailing the guys at JY Classics, as they seem to know Triumphs inside out.

I know they are a long way from you, but they might have some suggestions, or recommend someone else closer to you.

MrT My intentions are to machine a golf ball size gear knob as i agree the one fitted now looks out of place.
Cost for a gear gate plate, how much would you pay, the one thing that differs is the slot positions and size depending on the gear box.

Paul L I didn't take any pictures because i had some body doing a photo shoot for a magazine, they have already ran the initial car build in Junes issue and will be running the final build in July's issue.

The gear gate is now finished and fitted which works a treat, just need to machine a round gear knob to finish off.

Hot start saga still continues.

Still not 100% sure as to what's causing the none start when hot, been playing around with the pick up air gap for the electronic ignition and found that the info given by the supplier is not entirely true so are at the moment in negotiation for a solution.

Also been looking at the heat shield which Ive now extended so the whole underside of the carbs are covered.

Fabricated a plate from 2mm ally with 7mm spacers to give an air gap between the original shield and the new one.

Gave the car a run out then stopped for 10 mins parked up in the garage to retain as much heat as possible and she started after about three cranks with the throttle wide open, i may be on the right track but i still feel there's an issue with the electronic distributor. The dizzy shaft has 0.5mm side float which will give a fluctuating air gap when running, while the focal length for the pick up is 0.08mm to 0.10mm which is well below the half mill side float.

Can you wrap the manifold to assist in reducing the heatsoak? Or ceramic coating???
