Yep,done that. I'm rebuilding gearbox. So I am now trying to remove main shaft.

i think from memory the first motion shft stays in place......te mainsaft will just come out towards the rear in one lump less the first motionshaft.
then the fistmotion shaft can be removed..then the lay shaft and reverse gear and idler.............long time since i have done one.

With the lay gear dropped drive out the front bearing and input shaft. Then remove the small circlip on the back of the main shaft bearing and drive the main shaft forwards free of the bearing. Then drive the main shaft rear bearing backwards out of the box.(you need to remove either the speedo drive gear or if its an overdrive box remove the pump cam) Lift away the main shaft assembly from inside the box.

When dismantling the hubs on the main shaft make sure you note which way round they go and keep them all in order.

I must admit I couldn't face the internals of the box or the diff and I trusted them to Mike Papworth - the guru of Triumph drive trains. He's a great chap but it does require some open-wallet surgery.

Gary - Sorry I can't help with the gearbox question.

But the rolling chassis is starting to come together nicely.

Although it was always going to, given the restoration work you have done.

The circlip is already out of its groove as it is now up behind the speedo drive. You need to drive the speedo gear off the shaft. Then drive the main shaft forwards until its free of the bearing. Then drive the bearing backwards out of the box. Then refer to my previous post.

Re the diff I fear its too late to say don't dismantle. Definitely no further, make sure you keep all the shims in order.

Re the rear hub you will need a puller to get the bearing off the hub. I would suggest you get a workshop manual for MK2 Vitesse/GT6.
I wouldn't blast the casings as grit and gears don't go together. Just clean with a solvent cleaner. As Oxford says Mike Papworth is the man.

So, next step take speedo drive off, i have seen how you use a spanner to remove it. Then knock shaft into gearbox, is this when all the cogs become loose?
I will leave the diff as is.
I have all the manuals, but thought i would get a clearer picture of what to do on forum. Cheers, Ben.

Hi Gary, Yes that's it the 3rd/4th syncro hub (front) will fall off make sure you note which way round it is as the hub is not symmetrical one side has a bigger flange than the other. If you decide to dismantle further have fun getting off the front plain circlip that hides in front of 3rd gear and make sure you use a new one when you assemble it.

also, when i remove that main bearing what sort of hammer should i be using or should i make one of these...

wouldn't use a hammer Gary, that looks pretty simple to make so would go with that if you have the bits to make it, just make sure you tighten the nuts up evenly to draw the bearing out straight.

Nothing done as usual... got leaf spring off ebay for £21 inc.postage. now need to placre Canley order for next lot of bolts. Must get back to painting bedroom furniture.
