Default MOT Woes

Well the cabrio has been on the road for nearly 3 years so I submitted it for its first MOT.
It failed on emissions because the tester could not determine which test to apply, so he failed it.
I showed him using the engine number that the engine came from a 2l G reg Sierra, but he would not accept that because the VOSA manual of emission tests manual listed the engine number under "Ford Sierra", and my car was a Marlin.

There was some flowchart in the MOT testers manual that he tried to follow and that lead to a decision box that had a 'Yes' output but no 'No' output, and of course the answer to the question was 'No' so he was stimied there too.

Ha asked to see the log book as that was supposed to have the emissions level in it, but all the data was blank.

I've found a copy if the IVA pass certificate and that showed the emissions as N/A.

He has emailed the technical department at VOSA, but does anyone know of a definitive article that defines the testing criteria? I've googled but everything I seem to find is secondhand and considering how pedantic this tester is secondhand heresay would not be acceptable.

Apart from that I got an advisory on a non working indicator repeater.

Just take it to a better mot station!! IF IVA says not applicable, if then I would have thought that applies over everything.

What a PITA.

My Sportster was SVA'd and registered in May 2008. It has the required emmisions standard in a box on the lower half of the front page of the V5C.
But I think at my last MOT the tester found my car in the database and that told him the same information to test to. This was even after I had advised the DVLA of my engine change.

I'm not sure why your V5 wouldn't have something similar or why the MOT database didn't tell him what to do? Hopefully VOSA technical support will tell him what to do when you go back.

Good luck....

The entries for emissions data in the log book are completely blank.

On my V5C in the 'Special notes' Section 3 on the first page it says...

1. WAS REGISTERED AND/OR USED. DECLARED MANUFACTURED 2008.
2. KIT BUILT/CONVERTED - ASSEMBLED FROM PARTS ALL OFF WHICH MAY NOT BE NEW.
3. SVA/IVA CERT ISSUED 19 06 2008 EMISSION LIMIT - %CO 3.5; HC 012.

This was despite emmisions being marked as 'N/A' on my SVA certificate.
(The exhaust emissions Section V on page 2 are blank)

I think if your V5C does not have these or similar notes, then the registration was not done correctly by the DVLA office.

Well I would not be surprised if DVLA got the V5 wrong.
After registration they managed to:
1. Put my address as somewhere in Lancashire, not Somerset
2. The second issue described the car as 'Ford Seirra, 5 door hatchback' in blue with all the registration details of the donor car
3. Third attempt got nearly everthing correct except the chassis number.
4. Forth attempt is the current V5

The MOT tester has contacted me after he talked to VOSA. Emissions test will be for a 1990 non-CAT engine.
