Yeah on ours we cut down the length of each arm, drilled new holes and attached with two screws. They also needed the angles fine tuning which took a vice and a lot of force, took a few goes before it was right. Also found once the springs were in it need a more fine tuning.

I have a question about the wiring for the wiper motor (I am being lazy not wanting to work it out for myself)

The Lucas motor requires a +ve feed for the self parking. I assume this should just be live when none of the other feeds (1st or 2nd speed) are - is that correct?

I am using the BMW fusebox and loom. Does anyone know what this provides for the motor and whether I will have to modify anything for it to operate the Lucas motor? I seem to remember Richard saying he had to fit a relay for the parking feed.

I just used the K10 relay in the fuse box it has all connections nessecary.

Stuart - did that also give you the self parking as well? I have worked out how it operates on the Lucas motor and I can't see how the standard BMW connections would work without the addition of a relay.

I have worked out how the wiper motor is actually wired internally.

If you use the standard Lucas switch then when you turn the wiper off, it connects the park terminal (2) to the 1st speed terminal (5). The park contact is made until it is parked and supplies power to the single speed winding. When the motor is on either 1st or 2nd speed the switch disconnects the park terminal from the 1st speed terminal.

Simple really and, I suspect, a bit different to how the BMW switch and relay works.

If i remember correctly the BMW switch and K10 relay works exactly the same way park becomes live when switch is turned off.

Did anyone locate a source of the connector for the Lucas wiper motor? The spades in the connector don't seem to be the standard size. I could always solder wires on I suppose but then that's a problem if it ever has to be changed.

I've seen proper Lucas connectors and looms on ebay but they were rather expensive.(about £10?)

I just used some small connectors which I had in my box which I think were 4.8mm crimp terminals like these...

Try and check the size of the spades as I am not 100% sure on the size on this one but I did find some that fitted OK,

You said your arms were right hand park - but in the picture they appear to be parked on the left. Did you just flip (turn over) the arms after you had cut them to length by any chance?

I checked my Europaspares order and definately ordered ITEM : 5.2mm RHP - U71300 X 3

You can't flip them over as there is a pip that fits the wiper blade.
I think a better description would be Right Cranked as on the TEX website....

They were tested in extreme weather conditions on Sunday morning!!

Can anyone remember how thick the fibreglass is where the wiper spindles pass through? Mine are from a Mini and I think that they may be too short at about 2". (I think the ones from SVC are 2.5")

PS saw an awesome car at Knebworth - an Alfa Romeo Superleggaro - from the '30s I guess. The sort of car you normally only see pictures of in glossy classic car books. Quite why the owner decided to drive it up a dusty track and display it in a field (Knebworth) I really don't know....

I think the GRP is was only about 3mm thick. I also think my wheel boxes are from a mini and fitted Ok with some home made spacers. The spacers are expensive but i think if I did it again i'd buy them becuase i spent far too much time messing about making them.

So where's the pictures of this super car at Knebworth??

the thickness varies a bit, you might need to sand it back a bit which is what I had to do on mine

Thanks guys. That was what I was hoping. Looks like I can use my Mini wheel boxes (Ebay bargain) although I still have to get a third one. Should have the wipers installed just ready for when the car comes off the road for the winter at this rate....

On a related point I was looking at a couple of NG's that turned up at Knebworth. Their windscreen is a similar dimension to the Sportster but they only use 2 wipers. But it does leave large patches of the screen unswept. I was wondering how legal that is....
