Default Why?

What influences your decision on the kit you buy?

Why did you choose one kit over another?

What types of kit did you look at?

Personally when I was looking to buy I had 3 main criteria.

1. Price. I was on quite a limited budget to find the car I wanted.

2. Type of car. I liked the Porsche 550 styling, but really wanted a modern sports car. I wanted something fast and fun. It didn't need to be practical as I have another car (3 in fact), I would like to do a few track days and have fun on the local twisty lanes.

3. Quality. I suppose reputation is also included. I wanted a company that I could rely on for help (having never built a car before), a car that was not too complicated to build and one that would be reliable and solid enough to use regularly without falling apart.

Hopefully I got all of the above in the Marlin 5Exi.

The other cars that came close to my requirements were:

Shelsley T2, GTM Libra and Fisher Fury.

One car I fancied came out a matter of weeks after I ordered the Marlin. That was the Aeon 3.

Well it was way back in 1991 that I last bought a kit car but the decision to go with the Cortina based Sumo were....

1) It had to be a Cobra
2) It had to be cheap to build
3) It had to be cheap to insure (was only 21 then and these were the days of crazy insurance becaused of the GTi's XR3's etc)
4) It had to offer at least V6 option
5) Company had to have a good reputation

The rest is history - had many a good year with it but it was sold last summer

Back in the mists of time I owned a few Minis and bought Alternative Cars magazine. They advertised a car called a GTM which was a mid-engined Mini based sportscar. I bought one cos it's one of the top 5 prettiest cars I've ever seen. Then I couldn't resist the Libra. I knew it would be a good car, I knew what to expect from the company, I knew no-one else would be as good.

I wanted a decent sportscar, but didn't fit into a Lotus Esprit (this was back in 1990). I had always thought the Stratos ugly, but when I saw one in the flesh I soon decided I wanted one. Neither ease of build nor cost were really considerations. After 13 years I must still find it ugly, why else would I want to make it a Stratos-unlookalike?
