Welcome to the forum Jeff

Good luck with the Sumo build - I guess thats why you need a Rover V8 Bellhousing!

Good luck with the Sumo.
Getting one myself soon, like you I’m going to fit a Rover (if I can find one).

Just out of idle curiosity, why the Rover V8 rather than an American block?

I can't imagine the weight saving of an alloy block being all that important as the chassis and running gear wont exactly be light weight, will it?

Not that I'm complaining at you keeping it British, of course (we'll ignore the fact the Rover V8's based on a Buick design )!

Lex,
It’s all about balance. I’m not just referring to weight either.

Rover’s are economical, powerful enough, light and perfectly match the capabilities of the Ford mechanical parts of the Sumo.

I simply reckon that when one attempts to ‘balance’ any of these arguments (or specifications), the Rover wins every time.

Would have thought you had built enough Sumos to last you a lifetime. Isn't it time for a change or is it just too hard to let go of those apron strings

John,
Yes, but I’ve not built one from scratch and I’ve never had one I could call my own .

Note the emoticons!

I seem to remember seeing some bloke on telly tell Mark Evans that the Sumo would take a pinto or Ford V6. The next step was a Rover V8, then the daddy was the Chey 5.7l V8

Amazing what you remember isn't it?

I see there is a Filby icon just for Kitcarman

Truth is the first victim of propaganda .

Four points to justify that recommendation and a disclaimer .

Firstly, the TV company basically laid out their commercial objectives and ‘the script’ was edited to fit what they’d decided they were doing anyway.

Secondly, the use of new Chevy’s was fairly new to Pilgrim at the time and I believed it was the dogs gonads at the time the program was made, so I was being truthful .

Thirdly, in a commercial building environment the use of new engines made a lot of commercial sense. No labour expended in obtaining, removing, reconditioning, cleaning, etc, meant that complete new Chevy engines were cheaper than rebuilt Rover’s.

Fourthly, I was able to sell Chevy’s but could not supply Rover’s. Since the programme was going to an audience of newbies, the consensus was to promote that which was easy to supply.

Disclaimer , in the re-shooting and subsequent editing, the program makers got what they wanted and not necessarily what I was saying first time around. Subtle point, but if you’re ever been interviewed before a TV camera, you’ll realise how easily you can be manoeuvred into saying what THEY want said. One method they employ is to give you free speech for what they call take one. That’s the take with no film in the camera . For the second take, they say “we’ve got the first bit” (that which I wanted to say) “now give us this bit” (from a different camera angle). When I saw the edited programme a month later I couldn’t believe how I’d been duped . Having said this, it was OK by me for the audience it was aimed at.

Someone willing and able to re-build their own engine, who isn’t counting man-hours would do well to stick with Rover IMHO. So watch what I do .

Den,
knowing a few people in television production, I totally understand.

I can understand that for an out of the box solution a crated engine is a good solution, and having done the research on what a good Rover engine will cost, seemed a steal.

The nice thing about the ubiquotous RV8 is that is ubiquitous, so that the second hand route with shiny bits is a more economical route to go.

My Rush is having a 4.6 RV8 which fell off the front of a Range Rover. 55000 miles on it but it is going to be breathed on with new cam, manifold and a hooooge carb. All at reasonable money.

Getting giddy just thinking about it.
