Hi Dave it will be worth it mate.
As for the Primer as long as its etched on the body, you can put on as much as you like
You never use etch primer on GRp as it destroys the gel coat. Are you using High build primer on her ?

Now Im confused, thought there was issues with paint bonding if you didnt use etch primer, so its basic high build then on with the top coat, if etch destroys the gel coat will it blister underneath if applied first?

Hey guys, I need to come into this area,as I have already used etch primer in small patches on my gel coated body.
I used it all around the boot area, and half of the bonnet is coated with it.
I did not know it was detrimental to gel coat, and what I have applied, looks solid, no blisters no cracking crumbling or anything, in fact it looks perfect.
So, the big question is: How does etch primer not work with GRP?

I know Mike knows what he's talking about where spraying is concerned, but I contacted my paint manufacturer (Jawel) for advice before painting mine. They said I needed to degrease and key the surface first, then apply a couple of coats of etch primer before using the high build and top coats. They said their high build wouldn't stick to the 'glass without the etch primer first.
I sprayed it about ten months ago and it's still fine.

Just done some internet research, and Upol who make etch primer, recommend it for GRP, so it looks like they agree with Jawel, so perhaps it is okay?

Hi guys, it will probably be ok , but i was advised by Standox that sometimes can
make future problems . Its a gamble men. As a rule you always acid etch primer on steel. prior any spraying . Just don't use acid etch primer on grp. A two pack
1.1 grey primer will be fine , you only need a mist coat not solid prime.
My advise with getting your car nice and smooth after all the filler work is done.
A product called re face, you will need a big nozzle 2.3 or bigger. You can spray it on very heavy , it will level and fill in any pin holes and make it a consistent finish.
What this is , is a spray filler. it takes 20 minuets to dry and you only block it dry as due to being very porous and will hold moisture. Any way once this has been dry blocked and a nice finish we then repeat using a High build 4.1 primmer . this then can be wet blocked/.Hope this helps.
