Painting and Trimming

It's rapidly approaching the stage where i'm going to be painting and trimming the car (the end is in sight!) and so i thought i'd start a topic for us to discuss what we're all doing / planning / considering in case we can swap tips.

As far as my interior goes, it's going to be plain paint on the wood panneling to start with and then possibly vinyl wrapped during the winter and the dash may get changed to brushed aluminium if/when i fit the heater. But i'll dig for more details on those as i get to them....

In the immediate future I'm planning on spraying it myself in my garage (bought a load of 2nd hand air tool from a neighbour and a nice compressor to run them!), but I'm unsure of how much paint / primer I'll need? anyone got any ideas as a starter-for-10?

a little tip wash down the body with water or solvent this cleans away any release wax of the body ,before you start to sand and prep,because you can get wax in ur sanding bloc, and then it spreads over ur body,sanding will help key the body for the primmer "high build" 1 gallon of primmer is ideal, light grey, or a yellow if ur going for red finish,then b4 ur flatten the primmer back for top coat just get a can of black and spray light over ur primmer , thus helps you know how much primmer ur taken off when flatting it back b4 top coat,a 120 grit is good any finner u get paint runs and sags. top coat is up to u any thing 2 gallons up to 4, but u have to keep flatting back inbetween coats, but then we all have our ideas this is just mine...

Having now done a bit of reading up on the painting side of this, i've personally decided to opt for a Cellulose paint as it's easiest for me to home spray, and given the age of the car it's still legal although it does limit the colours that i can go for.

I have also already started filling and sanding the body tub and i can see what Mulberry means by the need to wash the body first!

Flooring wise i've come across these people who seem to do bulk rolls of rubber matting at quite reasonable prices. http://www.rubbermattinguk.co.uk/rub...il.asp?m=6&p=9

Nu Again paints on e bay will mix to any paint code so no limit for colour, I used them for cellulose primer, thinners and topcoat for my Herald no issues and about £150 all in..

im now considering the painting of the roadster

Im still unsure of the colour scheme but i am still keen to paint it very dark green. One thing for sure i want it to be in a colour from the 50/60's

I am thinking of keeping the painting part of the project in line with the rest of the project ie dirt cheap . Coach enamel is an option im considering.

How about using a foam roller to paint your car?
Its an old technique and if care is taken it can look really good.
plenty of applying thin coats and flatting back,
Time consuming but cheap.

Have a google on the net plenty that have done it usually Vdub boys.

yeah ive rollered a camper but rustoleum doesnt have the classic palette to choose from.

But a gloss roller may be used with a large brush to catch any sags or runs

I painted my previous kitcar (Sylva Mojo) using Internation perfection yacht paint. http://www.yachtpaint.com/gbr/diy/pr...erfection.aspx

The finish really wasn't great up close (more than a meter) it looked bobbled with an orange peel effect, but from further away than that, it looked great. Really shiny and glossy looking. My blog on the paint is here Don't buy it from there, buy International Perfection as its the same thing and much, much cheaper.

and pick 550 SPYDER from the Model list , you can customize your car's colour amongst other things and the 550 isn't so far away from my Spyder , stylewise , that it can't hurt to try out some colour options before you buy that paint !

If for no other reason ....its quite good fun !

The same site has VW Beetle , Camper etc. and kids ( and adults ) love customizing them on screen .....its very clever.

It sounds like it can be done, i would love to see one with out knowing that it hadn't been sprayed. It obviously still takes a lot of work to get it right. But if you are seeing what you can achieve on a budget, then give it a go... don't rush it though! nobody wants to be laughed at.

like any type of painting the key is preparation
I spoke to the guy at craftmaster and he advised me on the techniques and products to suit the project.

Not only do they have the colours listed on their colour charts but they can also custom make classic colours if they have a paint code .

I always liked the D type dark green and after a time researching I found the colour and code. Connaught green.

It was used on Jaguar, Morgan and Cooper race cars.
Craftmaster know the formula so in for a penny.......

Hopefully one day i might see it. Do you think Craftsmen could get the Lancia D24 colour? I wonder i can find out what it is... Also, if i was going to rebuild a Triumph engine would the Haynes manual be the best guide?

Hopefully in a couple of weeks time i will be going down to Quiller Triumph in Plumstead, south london to pick out a herald. Can't wait. Garyh.

I think the alfa red is simila to the lancia red its quite dark
Google for the paint colour and then give them a call

An old haynes manual should be good enough but the new manuals tend to just want to be service guides old manuals were complete strip downs and rebuilds.

I want a very glossy red finish, I think its known as Rosso Red.
That has helped me as I could pause it on the "very red" part!

Trev, have a search on e-bay for "red cellulose paint kit"

There are two reds on there Ford Radiant Red and Vauxhall Flame red that are very reasonably priced because they are mass market colours and i think that they should both be very close to what you're after!

I was going to go for the Vauxhall one as it was a good deal, but after a chat with the guys at nu-agane, they gave me a good deal and are gong to try and match the Alfa Red i am after, but in cellulose. The guy i spoke to was really nice and very knowledgeable!

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm getting mine professionally prepared and sprayed, I can't trust that I would get a good finish at all! Had a look at the link - if you've got the gear and the skill, its a bloody cheap way of getting colour onto the car.

My car goes off for prep & paint two weeks Saturday - lots to do before, including a week away on holiday.
