When I came off 6 years ago, the road was dry and was slowing down coming up to a roundabout. Next thing I know the front wheel slips away and I'm on the deck. Think the front tyre must have picked up some diesel. I lost my confidence (and some pride) after that.

A few of us do ride outs during the summer. We get back, drop the bikes off and stroll to the pub. Coming back from the pub I tripped over a kerb on the stagger home, still wearing my full biking gear. Grazed my leg and shoulder badly and was bruised all top one side, took a week to get over the aches and pains, this was tripping over, god knows what I would feel like coming off a 50mph. The older you get the worse it is

See here, Towed, I sneer at danger. It's forty years ago next month that my Wife first said, "my Mother's coming over for dinner."

Had to? No, no - did it because I wanted to.

I'm about a six minute walk from Olcott Beach:

https://www.google.com/search?q=olco...iw=800&bih=467

so I do get up there now and again on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. The "cruise nights" generally bring out between 200 and 500 classic cars (and some of the nicest folks you've ever met, of course); the three main (organised) shows bring over a thousand cars these days - larger than Monterey / Pebble Beach, though certainly not of that calibre. Still a pleasant day out, and always some interesting stuff - a few London-to-Brighton era cars (now and then I'll take the D D-B, but it's not as fast as walking), an handful of Italian stallions, and countless '60s and '70s American ponycars. Always delightful to see classics out on the road where they belong, rather than under a biostatic cover, inside an environmentally-controlled, hermetically sealed garage.

Not sure I can answer that, Dave. I'm captivated by the Golden Era road racers - from the early postwar period right into the mid-1950s - both the Italian and British, not simply for their looks, but for their drivability. There's something stunning about thrashing a nose-heavy, live axle roadster into a corner and secretly patting yourself on the back for checking the fuel level before doing so, knowing that the difference between understeer going in and oversteer coming out relies so heavily upon that critical front / rear weight ratio. Those open-air cars are the closest thing on the planet to riding a Black Lightning.

I love Veteran motorcars, and have owned two - an '03 D D-B Type N (current) and an '02 Olds (long past) - but treated both as drivers, and not as some sort of historical treasure. I truly like the 1899 Societe Parisienne Vickie which Hyman has been trying to sell for more than a year:

http://hymanltd.com/vehicles/5480-18...a-combination/

but it's been so heavily restored, and has so little provenance that I expect it will languish for sale for quite some time.

Visually, I like the French Connexion stuff - the Delahaye 135m, 165 and 175s, and the Delage D8-120 which came to life after Delage's merger with them at the end of the 1930s; the teardrop Talbot-Lagos (and the T-26 whose front elevation inspired Enzo Ferrari), the Avions Voisin C25 Aerodyne, and its later imitators (though I find most Tatras rather laughable), but have no desire for one (and couldn't afford the cost these days in any event).

I appreciate the detail in Brass Era stuff as well - Marmons and Maxwells and Mitchells (oh my), but again, not something I'd want to own. I guess the whole answer is, "I like cars that have wheels." Stupid answer, I know - but consider who you asked.

The Cobra aside how about yourself, Dave?

I think my favourite would have to be the Austin Healey 3000. At one point was thinking about buying a Haldane but really too much money when your'e not driving the real McCoy. Most of them go for 20k upwards.

This looks like a good example.

Also like the Triumph TR4 and Stag. Also not forgetting the MG TC.
