Oxford – This is the key thing to remember when you look back on your build.

As life is more important than building a car, so it is only right that it takes priority.

Having said that, I’m sure your new garage and tool chest will help you complete your build ‘one day’.

And I really believe the end result is more important than the time it took to achieve it.

Good luck, Paul.

PS
It was nice to see ‘Kermit’ photobombing your garage shot.

Oxford - Hi Rob,

The Goodwood Revival included a couple of options for you to upgrade both your tractor and your boat.

Any progress on the Spyder to report?

Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul,
No progress on the car at the moment, although garage is looking better and better. The tractor and boat are pretty cool. I'd have the Ferrari but wouldn't swap my Fergie. Porsche made a rather nice tractor as well (and I'm not talking about the Panamera).

I shall post some pics of my weekend shortly - the 2nd Watergate Bay Hillclimb.

My partner took me for a surprise day out on Saturday. Imagine my happiness as we approached Watergate Bay and I realised that the public road had been shut for a hillclimb.

It was a brilliant event - the first and currently only hillclimb on an English public road. All thanks to the recent(ish) change in legislation.

It was a stunning backdrop for some great cars.

If anyone fancies coming down next year, let me know. There were some good club stands in the paddock.

The Europa was my favourite Matchbox car as a child.

A very pretty Vixen.

A Mini...with Audi Quatro running gear.

On the move this time.

My favourite - a Chevron B19.

After a hiatus of three years, the first steps on the road to resumption have been taken.

I am going to take out the engine as there are some tweaks that three years of thinking have given rise to. I am also going to move the pedal box forward 50mm. It will make a huge difference to the driving position.

I agree - an 18 month project now entering its 10th year but...it is not over. The last few years have seen some big life changes.

I spent this weekend finally wiring the garage and I popped the engine out so that I can tidy the front brake line.

Pictures of other work will appear soon.

I know it has been a while, but the rules haven't changed.

If there are no photos, then it didn't happen.

Good luck, Paul.

So, it has been 3 years and 4 months since I did any meaningful work on the car. In that time I got divorced and decided on a big life change to a more rural existence in Devon...with someone who actually likes me. As a result, I have a rather nice double garage.

During this period I also thought about the things that I needed to change on the car. The biggest issue was the seating position. Despite all my measurements, the pedals were a fraction too close. I knew that if I could move the pedal box 5cm forward, it would be more comfortable and I would be able to fit my preferred 14" Mota Lita.

The only problem was, the front bulkhead was too close for me to move the pedals.

My parting picture in May 2017 was this -

All very neat but too close to the driver... So, how could I extend the bulkhead...

A quick look on eBay revealed some rather neat aluminium boxes that are meant to hold electrical components...

Cut the back out with a jigsaw...

Fit to the bulkhead and mark out the aperture...

Bingo! Extended bulkhead. This is just so that the stems on the pedals can go beyond the old bulkhead when depressed. The pedal faces (foot pads) go no further than the plane of the old bulkhead, i.e my feet don't have to fit into the new space.

All very neat and a very comfortable driving position.

And, no, there is plenty of clearance with the front wheel, and there was enough pipe to tweak the twists and turns so as not to have to make any new brake and clutch pipes.
It also makes the bulkhead look more interesting which is a bonus. I'm tempted to add one to the passenger side for no reason at all.

And, yes, there should be regular updates from now on.

Oxford - Sorry, I hadn't picked up on the divorce.

But I'm pleased to hear the rural relocation is working out for you.

Nice job on the bulkhead too.

Good luck, Paul.

Good to hear your life's sorted and nice to see some progress on your car. I do like those alloy boxes, I might just have to find a use for a few myself...

Mick, Paul, Mr T and Micky - Thanks! It felt very good to be back at it. A decent sized workspace also adds to the pleasure...and a large screen and WiFi means I can have the cricket or F1 on while I work.
