Changing the V5
Could any of you who have finished your kits tell me how you approached getting the V5 modified to better discribe what the car now is.
I've been given a number for the Swansea Licencing section but is it worth just sending in the V5 with a note of what changes you want to make and seeing what they say first?
What did you change the name to? BMW Kobra, Tribute Kobra, BMW Tribute?
Any help greatly appreciated!

I am sure someone can post up the link to the form you need. You send it in with your receipts and V5 saying what you want the car to be. They may call you to discuss the details. They then send you back the modified V5.
You have to keep the manufacturer name unchanged so if it is BMW it stays BMW and if it is Mazda it stays Mazda.
Theoretically you can call the model what ever you like. I chose "Z300S Barchetta"
The woman the the DVLA phone me up and said that wasn't the name of the kit that Chris supplied. I explained that we used parts of various kits and created a whole new car (Mine was the first so before there was a kit available)
She said she would register it as a "Z300S Kit" then.
I explained it wasn't a kit.
She said she would register is a a "Z300S Replica" then.
I explained it wasn't a replica.

I started to cry down the phone and gave up.
When I got the V5 back it said "Z300S Replica". I phone up and asked what it was a replica of. The lady said it was a replica of a Z300S. I asked what that was and she said she had no idea as it was my car!
Have fun!

sounds about right. Thanks for the reply.
Hard to get them sensed into what you're doing with these things. I was told by a guy at the local mot centre that if things like the indicators have been moved it'll need an IVA! He did a bit of research then and came back to admit he really didn't know and told me to ring Swansea.

Edited to say I just rang Swansea to see - put on hold whilst she to spoke to her supervisor.
Despite it being a change of appearance they have told me that, because its still a Z3 underneath, they want it kept as a Z3 on the documents. I just need to inform them of the colour change!

I just filled out the appropriate form, returned it to them with photos and receipts of the major parts used. I then waited 4 months, finally called them and got my v5 back stating it was a Mazda MX250 spyder .
Good luck

Exact opposite of what I was told when I made that call!

Well for now ill get the colour changed and see what happens from there. Bit of a grey area so I can't see me getting fined for it.

Most likely. I think if I do get pulled over it'll be more out of curiosity than anything else (unless I happen to be doing 95 at the time!) (not that I would be though )

BlueFace - By chance, we are having the same conversation "next door".
If it helps, this is what the DVLA sent me:
Booklet INF26
http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum.../dg_180218.pdf
Form V627/1
https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...7X1_270913.pdf
It is very frustrating that the answer varies depending on who you speak to.
Good luck & keep us posted on how you get on, Paul.

WCA - I am planning to argue the same thing, that the Sammio kit was just one of the many parts required to build the car.
That puts the change in "Section 2" of the DVLA booklet, which has no IVA requirement.

Thanks Paul. That booklet is most helpful and tells me I do need to change the car description. Not sure how to go about filling out that form though. Do you just put what you want to call the car in the section for model?

I sent a letter to the DVLA this morning asking that very question.
I'll let you know if I hear an answer before you do.

Having dug up my notes on this, what we are doing falls in to section 2, section 3 or even possibly section 5 of those guidance notes.
Section 2 - We meet all criteria, no IVA required.
Section 3 - We meet all criteria and TBH it sounds like we fit better into this category. Again with what we are doing no IVA is required, and from the "rebodied classic" approach that Sammio/Migilia/Tribuite take, then Sections 2 and 3 are pretty much identical.
Section 5 -We "could" fall into this category, but TBH we meet others better and this seems more appropriate to other conversions. Even if someone does gets forced down this category then i can't see it being too much of an issue to prove that we fit into one of the others instead. Even if forced then i'd say that we're still fine and don't need an IVA, although the wording in this section is the most ambiguous in those guidance notes and can be read in a few ways and is most likely to cause bureaucracy.
If we base our applications on the previous Sammio/Ribble applications, where you show that you have max points from untouched donor chassis etc. and that what we are doing is a 'rebody' rather than building a kit-car then we'll be fine

There is no IVA to worry about, just fill in the form, send off the paper work and wait. Just don't expect intelligent conversations if they do phone you with questions.

Blueface - I got a reply from the DVLA today and they did provide an answer about the name...
"Please give the vehicle name you think best describes the vehicle"
Unfortunately I couldn't get an definitive answers to any of my other questions.
Hope that helps, Paul.
