I REMEMBER THAT ONE ...I modified the rear wings to accept the Morris Minor tail lights for the customer ..it was a fairly early build and appeared with S*MMIO written around the rear arches at one point too ...

Gone from it's starting price of just over £3K to over £5k in less than 24 hours.
It is nice to see that all the hard work and detail that has gone into this build looks like paying off. I know that a lot more work goes into a build like this than a Tribute style panel swap, hope he gets good money for it. He did have a buy it now price of £5.5K? This can sometimes give a buyer the impression that it is all the car is worth and they won't bid above the figure, hope that doesn't happen in this case, looks to be as if it should sell sell closer to £10K than £5K.

Sweepstake anyone?

I've said this before, but I don't believe an ebay auction is the best way to sell specialist classic replicas/tributes.

These are rare and desirable cars - there are only around 120 Sammio Spyders out there (and even less Tributes?) and even my humble example turns more heads than a £150k Ferrari -

I'd say you're absolutely right that by putting a 'buy it now' price of five and a half grand on it the seller is telling the world that's what it's worth.

The only people who'll be bidding will have around that to spend on an indulgence car while potential buyers with four or five times that budget won't even have noticed it.

And if anyone doubts that those buyers exist, just bear in mind that there are now kit car companies selling turn-key Ferrari, Jaguar and Aston Martin lookalikes for £80-£120k, while even humble Beetle based 356 Speedsters are now 'from' £28k. (I also had a serious offer of a straight swap for a nearly new car worth over £20k on the very first day I drove mine in 2013).

The car going on ebay looks superb, it has a very nice interior and is extremely well presented. If it was advertised with better wording, better pictures and in a more appropriate place with a set price somewhere north of £20k I have no doubt it would find a buyer (I'd also advertise it on ebay at that price as a classified ad to stand the best chance of European buyers finding it).

I hope to be proven wrong, but as it is, my best guess is that it won't make anything like what it's worth and will probably struggle to make seven thousand pounds. That's a real shame.

...eating my words above as we speak, it's now almost reached £7k. I still believe it's worth at least three times that figure though.

ALMOST CERTAINLY AN OVERSEAS BID , I SUSPECT ...I think these cars are worth strong money too ...as the price of classic cars goes up generally across the board , these little cars are perfectly entitled to follow that trend ...good luck to the seller and I hope it reaches its true worth too ...

I agree these cars need to be advertised on the appropriate sites to reach their potential, it would be interesting to see just what these little cars can fetch.

The car has been removed from Ebay so the seller must of had a sound offer.

...or the seller might have read this thread and re-evaluated his expectations.

On a positive note, it had reached £6,900 (possibly more?) in about 24hrs with nine days still to run. That's a pretty impressive start and it was clearly heading in the right direction, especially as the seller had originally put a 'buy it now' price of just £5,250 on it (click 'see original listing' next to the title).

Hopefully someone with deep pockets fell in love with it and made the seller an offer he couldn't refuse.

So, if you're thinking of selling your Sammio, Tribute, Speedster etc., don't forget that prices of genuine classic sports/racing cars have gone through the roof recently - for example, ten years ago you could pick up a decent Porsche 356 Speedster for around $30k to $40k, but they've rocketed since then with a current entry level of around $180k and at least one car going for nearly one and a half million dollars (bought by Doctor Evil?)

http://borderreivers.co/porsche-356-auction-prices/

This means that even low-level millionaires can't afford a real one but would happily stump up twenty, thirty or even fifty thousand for an exciting weekend indulgence car that really turns heads. Like a Sammio Spyder.

Maybe Sammio seller's should have a look at the way this guy is listing his car before listing there own car. .

Looking at the way the mudguards fit on the Citroen I think he will be lucky to get 50 quid for it.

I like it. Wonderfully oddball and just lacking a few finishing touches to make it worth the asking price.

Incidentally, the reference to a non-paying bidder is another good reason not to go down the ebay auction route. That happened to me a couple of months ago and it's a pain in the arse - the buyer kept saying they were going to arrive to pay and collect the car but never did, making some bizarre and frankly untrue excuses, like suddenly realising that they hadn't got a car, then having to go to Scotland instead where they were stranded for a week due to the car they didn't have breaking down, etc., etc.

Why do people bid on ebay with no intention of buying the item?

Da, since losing job as KGB assassin because of argument with Tovarisch Putin over who look more sexy time naked horseback riding with po-face expression and flex muscle, I find work as minder for bourgeois pig with crazy dustbin car.

Okay, it only pay minimum wage of six-pack per hour, but I can live on that until stranger in leather coat with strong, Slavic jawline offer me vodka with hint of rare isotope and farewell message from Uncle Vladimir.

...a snip at £30k -

Sammio is far prettier imho.

Mind you, the youtube links are very interesting, love this short video -

...but the 180 at the end does demonstrate the limitations of the bug chassis.
