Default DVLA...Odd one

Bought an old "B" reg plate to go on the 250 a couple of days back from Ebay for £60. They asked me to send them the V5 and a cheque made out to the DVLA for £80 so that they can start the transfer.
They received the paperwork this morning and I got an Email saying the transfer had been completed and the new reg is showing up on the DVLA website as belonging to my Z3.
However the car is not insured (until the 1st) and it is not taxed. I didn't think you could transfer a plate unless it was MOT'd, taxed and insured.

Of course now the (V5) document number has changed so I can't tax and so can't use it

Do I need to change the V5 to change the body shape or is that just going to open a whole new can of worms?

You won't be able to use it without notifying DVLA of the body change either! What are you going to call it?

Might be worth talking directly with DVLA to ask them exactly what they need and which forms to fill in.
Might be worth asking Chris to see what he has done in the past.
Its only a panel swop kit so no IVA, so it should be easy !

I would tax it online as soon as you can ..probably when the V5c arrives unfortunately as you need the reference no. and then send the V5 in with the body change form ..the form number escapes me at the moment , but its the same one we used for S*mmio's when we notified the changes ... Chris will know ... but tax it before you lose the V5 for another 6 weeks and its referencce number changes ...

It gets even odder, I phoned the DVLA to explain that I hadn't expected the transfer to go through so quickly as I was going to tax the car tomorrow on the first.
I was hoping they could give me the new V5 document reference number so I could tax it on line tomorrow.
Not only were they really helpful but they said they could take payment now and tax it for tomorrow. I explained that it wasn't insured today and wouldn't be insured until tomorrow, No problem they can still tax it for me!
So car is taxed (tomorrow) with no insurance showing and no V5 in my hand.
Very impressed that they were so helpful, that and changing a registration plate in 1 day.
Top marks 10/10.

You will find that if you offer to pay a tax they will snap your hand off rather than trying to make it hard for you. They simply need the money. Insurances, Mot and other legalities are up to you to sort out in the eyes of DVLA.

I've never known them to allow you to tax a car without insurance before.

Your Mot, insurance and road tax are on a linked system . Its up to you to make sure its all in place before you go on the road. The DVLA system changed earlier in the year in this respect. Its about Tax revenue imo.

As above

It is your responsibility to be legal with insurance etc, they will take their tax without it in place, it is just the automatic systems that can't cope with that.

Got my V5 changed listing the car as a "Tribute California" in 4 days from the DVLA, excellent service. I must say that the service from the DVLA at the moment is excellent, they are actually being very helpful rather than putting every obstacle in your way.

I have been checking online but my car wasn't showing up on the DVLA searches, however it was coming up on "asked" and it also listed the new name.
